On the Way: 2 New Places Westchester Kids Can Swim & Play

2/1/17 - By Lisa Johnston

Parents looking for places for kids to burn off steam or learn a new sport will be happy to know Westchester has two new businesses on the way: SwimLabs Westchester in Elmsford and Kids in Sports in Scarsdale. Both are franchises of larger chains, and both intend to provide families with new ways to stay active.

Kids in Sports, which also has locations in Manhattan and Greenwich, Conn., will offer athletic instructional classes for ages 1-12. Kids can try their hands at seven different sports in the Multi-Sport Class, or they can receive instruction in a single sport. There will even be a drop-off Preschool Athlete program that combines sports and games with circle time, puzzles and art projects.

The 3,200-square-foot space will house a sports room, a parents lounge and a party room. As with other athletic facilities in our area, Kids in Sports will host birthday parties, indoor and outdoor camps, and drop-off play sessions.

Its founder tells us it expects to open the week of February 20 and intends to have an open house on February 26. Fees will charged per session (a group of classes), but there will not be a membership fee.

SwimLabs Westchester, meanwhile, is being readied by Diane and Rodney Weinstein, a White Plains couple with five children. SwimLabs differs from other swimming facilities in several ways: For one, the pool is kept at a balmy 92 degrees, so kids won’t be reluctantly creeping into cold water. For another, all of the pools are outfitted with mirrors on the bottom, current machines, and underwater and overhead cameras. Yes, this is high-tech swimming, and the Weinsteins say Olympian Kim Vandenberg will even be teaching lessons!

The advantages to all of this technology, we're told, is that it enables instructors to provide instant, detailed feedback to swimmers.  Classes for all ages and skill levels will be offered—ranging from parent and child to triathletes and Olympic hopefuls—and you can enroll in group or private lessons.

The 6,500-square-foot facility will have four pools when it opens (currently slated for June 1) with six swimming “flumes.” There will be a $50 annual membership, which is in addition to the cost of instructions.
