Celebrate Mother's Day at the New York Botanical Garden

5/6/14 - By Linda DiProperzio

While a beautiful bouquet of flowers is always appreciated on Mother's Day, why not give mom a chance to enjoy one of the most beautiful gardens in the area? During Mother's Day weekend, the New York Botanical Garden is holding a special garden party with a vintage twist. There will be plenty of activities for mom—and the entire family—to enjoy.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

Families can head to the New York Botanical Garden on May 10 and 11 from 11am-5pm for live music, games, casual picnicking and more. Children can make an afternoon of crafting birds' nests, Mother's Day cards and giant chalk drawings in the Everett Children's Adventure Garden. And all guests can enjoy flying kites (weather permitting), perfecting their badminton and croquet games, participating in a hula-hoop contest or challenging the family to a game on the Garden's new giant chess boards.

Once they've worked up an appetite, families can hop between the visiting food trucks and snack vendors—including beer and wine for adults—for a picnic outdoors on Daffodil Hill. Or enjoy a special brunch in the Garden Terrace Room (special ticket is required), or beverages and snacks at the Stone Mill, presented by Stephen STARR Events (special ticket is required).

There's also a variety of programs available during the weekend, including music from the 1920s and early 1930s featuring Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra, as well as a phonograph DJ spinning original music from the '20s in between live sets. A vintage-style photographer is on hand to snap pictures of families at the Azalea Garden, available for download the next day. Also planned are tours and walks in the Native Plant Garden Azalea Garden, as well as an array of educational programs throughout the weekend. Be sure to look at the Garden's schedule before heading over.
