Things to do

Adults and kids alike will enjoy a trip to the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary.  The sanctuary is comprised of 276 acres of field and floodplain habitat that is home to over 200 species of wildlife.  Within the sanctuary is the Hoffman Center for Conservation and Environmental Education.  The center boasts an environmental learning center, tree-top level observation deck, bookstore and exhibits.  Well maintained trails ranging from .3 to 1.3 miles traverse the land of the sanctuary.  Perfect for hiking or biking, these trails are a great way to observe the local wildlife.

The Cross Estate Gardens, located on Old Jockey Hollow Road in Bernardsville, is a gardeners dream.  A self guided walking tour through the gardens provides visitors with the opportunity to view historic trees, such as the Silver Maple and Chinese Sequoia, and learn about their importance to Native Americans and colonists.  In addition, the landscape includes a perennial garden, a wisteria covered pergola, a mountain laurel allee and a garden of native plants.  While there, take a hike to the New Jersey Brigade area.  About 900 soldiers of the New Jersey Brigade of the Continental Army encamped at what is now a preserved site at the Cross Estate Gardens.  Admission to the Gardens is free.

Shopping

Downtown Bernardsville is home to some unique shops and galleries.  Be sure to check out The Bookworm.  This adorable little book store is tucked away on Claremont Avenue.  The store sells both adult and children's books and often hosts book signings.  Not sure if you or your child will enjoy a book? Ask the delightful staff for a recommendation or simply check out the yellow cards that are are attached to the books with the staff's comments and reactions.  Other great shops include The Organic Nest, an eco living lifestyle shop that sells natural bedding, toys and children's apparel and The Bearded Dragon, a unique gaming store that sells table top games and accessories.  The downtown also includes toy, furniture and clothing stores as well as coffee shops and a movie theater.

Places to eat

For casual, family dining, stop in the Claremont Tavern, a local favorite offering American and global comfort foods.  Another great option, the newly renovated Station offers family favorites like burgers, dogs and wings as well as delectable entrees that include steak and lobster.  The Station has views of the historic train station and offers outdoor seating.  For fine dining, check out the stunning Bernards Inn which features progressive American cuisine.  The restaurant has an award winning wine collection and has been distinguished as one of "New Jersey's Best" gourmet restaurants by Zagat's.  Some other great options are Osteria Morini and Bistro Seven Three.  Finally, be sure to stop in the local ice cream shop, Penguin Ice Cream, for dessert.  

Annual Events

Bernardsville hosts several annual events.  In June, the Chamber of Commerce hosts Sounds Around Town, during which local businesses open their doors to strolling musicians.  In May, the town hosts an annual street fair and Memorial Day Parade.  Additional town wide events include a fishing derby and National Night Out.

Nearby Bernardsville

Head to the neighboring town of Morristown to visit the Morris Museum, Morristown National Historic Park, Washington's headquarters and Ford Mansion.  Nearby Far Hills is home to the USGA Golf Museum and Natirar, a beautiful 400 acre property great for fishing, hiking and cross country skiing.
