The Orlando Science Center (OSC) recently debuted a permanent exhibit, Life, that focuses on nature and conservation. Presented by Dr. Sarah Layton, Life narrates the conservation story through the animals that share our planet. I recently visited, and my kids loved exploring the immersive environments and hands-on exhibits that show how human actions impact all living things, locally and globally.

The exhibit highlights three distinct world environments: Rainforest, Ocean, and Swamp. These areas feature interactive learning where visitors are encouraged to engage and take positive action to conserve natural resources and protect our planet.

Orlando Science Center Life Exhibit

Rainforest

Explore the lush landscape of the tropical Rainforest in this immersive environment, which features free-flying birds such as tanagers, honeycreepers, and blackbirds. Spot a sleeping sloth or playful tamarin in the canopy, and enjoy the sounds of the 17-foot waterfall cascading into a pool of freshwater fish.

The layers of healthy rainforests create habitats where plants and animals can flourish. Amazon rainforests absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, essential for respiration.

Ocean

Dive into the Ocean environment and experience a 360-degree viewing area complete with reef fish and sharks. This space also features interactive learning stations such as digital projectors and a touch tank that showcase the crucial role that reefs play in the environment.

Covering most of Earth's surface, oceans are essential for life. They produce much of our oxygen, regulate the climate, and drive weather patterns. Coral reefs and seagrass meadows, which connect to the open ocean, serve as breeding grounds, nurseries, and feeding areas for many marine species.

Swamp

The Swamp environment replicates a cypress swamp, featuring towering trees and native species such as alligators and turtles. Look up to spot squirrels running through multi-dimensional tunnels. This area also includes a presentation space for OSC’s animal ambassadors.

Swamps are common in Florida's wetlands. They are crucial for wildlife, offering food, habitats, and breeding grounds for birds, fish, and other animals. Swamps also filter and purify much of Florida's water supply.
