25 Free Things to do in September

School has started, but that is no reason to stop having family fun-time. In fact September marks the beginning of a ton of autumn fun! There are festivals, carnivals, free museum days, and other memorable happenings. To get the full fall picture, check out our fun Fall Guide.

1. Lyman Allyn Art Museum Free First Saturday — New London
Saturday, September 1
The Art Museum offers a different themed activity every month.  For the month of September, visitors will try their hand at "bubble printing."

2. Open Farm Day at Common Ground — New Haven
Saturday, September 1
See the learning garden as it winds down for the summer. Children can meet the animals including: ducks, sheep, turkey's, goats, and chickens. The farm is open from 10am to 2pm.

Join Jim Knox, Beardsley Zoo's Education Curator as he shares different wild animals. Shows are at 2pm and 2:35pm. 

6. Classic Cruise Night at Ocean Beach — New London
Sunday, September 2
Do your kids love old-fashioned cars?  This is the place to come and see a lot of them all assembled in one location. DJ's will be spinning some oldies tunes and parking and admission are free.

7. Chelsea Piers Open House — Stamford
Tuesday, September 4 - Wednesday, September 5
Does your child want to try a new sport? Come to the sports center and let them try out soccer, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, and more.

8. Trumbull Summer Concert Series — Trumbull

This is the last concert of the summer series. Come out with your family and listen to The Barons.

9. Second Saturdays at the Atheneum — Hartford
Saturday, September 8
Free admission to the Atheneum on the Second Saturday of the month. Create a cross-hatched paper costume and try some paper puppetry.

10. Wapping Fair — South Windsor
Thursday, September 6 to Sunday, September 9
Free for kids 57 and under (seriously, that's what the website says!). Come and see the High Flying Frisbee Dogs, JD Winslow Equestrian Entertainment, and the Magic of Christopher There will be a petting zoo, camel and pony rides, livestock, and other neat forms of entertainment. 

11. Free Evening at Stepping Stones Museum — Stonington
Thursday, September 6
Families can enjoy the museum for free every Thursday evening.

12. Septemberfest in Simsbury — Simsbury
Friday, September 7 through Sunday, September 9
Children 13 and younger get free admission. A three-day long family festival focusing on children. Tons of activities for kids and Friday night fireworks!

13. East Haven Fall Festival — East Haven
Friday, September 7 through Sunday, September 9
This is a real hometown festival for the whole family.  Enjoy live music, rides, food, games, a car show, and a craft show as well. Local singers and dancers will be performing all weekend.

14. Family Art Day at Weed Memorial Library — Stamford
Saturday, September 8
Head down to Stamford to Weed Memorial Library and create a unique piece of art for free.

15. Putnam River Fire — Putnam
Saturday, September 8
Stroll along the Putnam River while it is completely lit up! Floating fire pots are lit and sent into the water to create a beautiful effect.

16. St. Peter's Apple Festival — Monroe
Saturday, September 8 - Sunday, September 9
The Apple Festival is a town-wide tradition with lots for kids to do. Stroll through the craft and food vendors. Enjoy kids games with prizes, live music, a mum sale, and raffle prizes.

17. Family Fall Funfest — Waterbury
Sunday, September 9
United Methodist Church of Waterbury's annual kid-oriented event. Children will enjoy games, crafts, prizes, demonstrations, and a live petting zoo. Climb on the pirate ship or the princess carriage. Open from 10am to 2pm.

18. Berlin Fair — Berlin
Friday, September 14 to Sunday, September 16
Children under 11 are free. This huge fair is going on 70 years of running. Watch pig and hot dog racing, livestock competitions, and tractor pulls. There are rides and food and carnival style fun. Donations for the Berlin Food Bank are accepted at all gates.

19. Fall Festival — West Hartford
Saturday, September 15
West Hartford invites you to Elmwood Plaza for a Fall kidsfest. Children up to age 10 can get a free pumpkin, and there will be cookie decorating, bounce houses, and crafts and games.

20. Bristol Mum Festival — Bristol
Thursday, September 20 - Sunday, September 23
Formerly known as "The Mum City," Bristol is keeping tradition alive. This year's theme for the festival is "Fall In Love with Bristol." Families will enjoy live music, a carnival midway, car show, food, and more. Enjoy the Mum Parade too!

21. Lisbon Fall Festival — Lisbon
Friday, September 21 to Saturday, September 22
Starting with a fun 3.5 color run, the Fall Festival will include many things for children to enjoy. Let your kiddos touch a truck, bounce around in a knocker ball, or play traditional games like the three-legged race. Delicious carnival food and huge craft fair on-site as well.

Seymour Pumpkin Festival 

22. Seymour Pumpkin Festival — Seymour
Sunday, September 23
Pumpkin season is a reason to celebrate! In this carnival-style festival, kids can enjoy games, rides, food, entertainment, children's contests, and a live petting zoo. 

23. Southington Apple Harvest Festival — Southington
September 28-30 and October 5-7
This very well attended festival attracted thousands of visitors for two weekends. Families will enjoy live music, entertainment, crafts, contests, food, and a nighttime fireworks program. 

24. Imagine Nation loves Plainville — Bristol
Saturday, September 29
Free admission for the first 100 Plainville residents to this very popular and fun children's museum. Learn more about kaleidoscopes, leaf rubbing, and art.

25. Ansonia Harvest Festival — Ansonia
Saturday, September 29
From 11am to 4pm, children will enjoy bounce hoses, batting cage, food, vendors, and music.
