NJ Weekend November 20 & 21: An 1838 Thanksgiving, Table Customs & Manners and Animal Adventures.
Get a head start on Thanksgiving by experiencing an 1838 Thanksgiving celebration at the historic village of Allaire or by brushing up on Thanksgiving table customs and manners at the historic Miller-Cory House. With winter nearly upon us, nature centers like the Raptor Trust are offering workshops on making cozy owl homes for the winter and the Plainsboro Preserve is teaching kids how to make plaster casts of disappearing animal tracks. Jenkinson's Aquarium is also doing a behind the scenes tour this weekend that animal lovers will not want to miss. Finally, for those who felt Halloween was just too short, the Raices Cultural Center is hosting a fun Day of the Dead Family Day with fun art, storytelling and crafts.

1836 Thanksgiving Celebration at the Historic Allaire Village (Farmingdale)
What was it like on Thanksgiving in 1836? You will attend a reenactment of a church service, tour the village to watch the craftsmen and meal preparations, try a hand a cider pressing, and watch the Allaire family celebrate the holiday. Sunday from noon to 3pm. Admission is $3 per adult, $2 per child ages 6-12. Food is not served at the event, but you can purchase cider and cake at the Howell Works Bakery.
Annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Table Customs and Manners at the Miller-Cory House (Westfield)
We could all use a little brushing up on table manners right before Thanksgiving, and luckily the staff at Miller Cory House are up to the task! The program is even geared towards children! Sunday from 2pm to 4pm. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for students, and children under 4 are free.
Owls in the House at the Raptor Trust (Millington)
This unique wild bird rehabilitation center has a special workshop where you can meet a live owl, learn about the owls that live in NJ, and finally build a special owl house for your own backyard! Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. Ages 7 and up. $10 per person. Screech owl box kits are optional and cost and additional $40.
Tracking: Making Plaster Casts at Plainsboro Preserve (Cranbury)
See samples of plaster casts from tracks of local animals like bears,coyotes and birds. Then head outside to find tracks and make your own plaster casts. Saturday from 3:30pm to 5pm. $5 per person. Pre-registration encouraged by calling 609-897-9400
Behind the Scenes at Jenkinson's Aquarium (Point Pleasant)
This tour includes a behind the scenes peek at the penguin spa where penguins relax when not on display, tops of tanks, the kitchen where food is prepped for the animals on display, and hands on activities like touching live starfish and horseshoe crabs. Saturday, 9:30am to 11:00am. Ages 5 and up only. Sneakers are required. $14 for adults & $10 for children. Call to pre-register: 732-899-1659.
Day of the Dead Family Arts Day at Raices Cultural Center (New Brunswick)
The Day of the Dead IS a November holiday after all! This weekend kids can see the artwork of Jonathan Jacob Horowitz and celebrate the tradition Day of the Dead with an afternoon of storytelling and cultural crafts, while surrounded by the Day of the Dead Art Exhibit. Sunday 1pm to 3pm. Recommended for kids 5-12 with their parents. $5 per child donation.
