Founded by the Dana Foundation, Brain Week takes place in March all over the world. It's organized locally by the Greater NYC Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience, and while some events are just for grown-ups, many are tween- and teen-friendly.

You can find the complete schedule online, but here are our top picks for NYC Brain Week events to try with kids. Remember, although they're all FREE or inexpensive, preregistration is often required.

Animal Models in Neuroscience – Upper West Side
Saturday, March 14-Sunday, March 15
Drop in to the American Museum of Natural History to discover how studying animals and insects sheds light on how the human brain works. Neuroscientists will demonstrate experiments with fruit flies and worms, and there will be hands-on activities that explore anatomy and brain function. Free with suggested museum admission: $22 for adults, $12.50 for ages 2-12

NYU Brain Fair – Kips Bay
Tuesday, March 17
Head to NYU Langone Medical Center to explore the brain with neuroscientists. School-age kids and adults can learn about the organ through hands-on activities and even check out an actual brain. FREE but preregistration required.

Columbia Brain Expo – Washington Heights
Wednesday, March 18
Play brain games by testing and tricking your mind at this third annual expo featuring demos by scientists and activities for all ages. FREE but preregistration required.

Wish Bones – Chelsea
Wednesday, March 18-Friday, March 20
Check out Inter Space, a real working neuroscience research lab and gallery. Its current project is understanding the neurological and genetic basis of creativity and influence. FREE

BioBase – East Village
Thursday, March 19
Head to the Lower East Side Girls Club to try a variety of hands-on neuroscience stations where kids can learn about brain anatomy, function and genetics. Several microscopes will also be on hand and visitors will also get a peek at the club's new NeuroDome. All activities are managed by the smarties at BioBus so we expect fun and fascinating things. FREE but preregistration required.

BioBus – Greenwich Village
Saturday, March 21
If you can't make the BioBase on Thursday, you can still explore the BioBus today, which will be parked by Washington Square Park. Drop in to this mobile lab to learn about all kinds of brains, from rats to people. FREE

Brain Week at Body Worlds: Pulse – Times Square
Saturday, March 21
Head down to the Discovery Times Square classroom for a Brain Party, complete with activities, workbooks, and an up-close look at real brain specimens. FREE with exhibit admission, $19.50 for children ages 3-11 and $27 for adults

Healthy Brain Network’s Brain Awareness Day – Staten Island
Saturday, March 28
Enjoy a wide variety of activities for all ages that teach participants about the brain and the importance of good mental health. Kids will play games and try hands-in activities while parents attend educational workshops. Sponsored by the Child Mind Institute. FREE
