12/3/09 - By

With possible snow in the forecast for the weekend, it might be hard to escape the Holiday Spirit. Maybe you and your family are ready to thrust into full fledged Holiday mode, and if so, you should check out one of our recent posts about where to visit Santa or where to get a fresh Christmas tree. But, if you're not quite ready, and you are just looking for a nice diversion, there are a few terrific  things going on for you as well.   Either way, check out our picks for great family weekend activities on Long Island:

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

Holiday Cheer on Main Street
Friday, December 4th, 5pm-9pm
Main Street in Babylon

Another one of those Long Island traditions like the family farms and festivals, are the Village celebrations. This weekend, Babylon is kicking off the Holiday celebrations Friday evening. Santa arrives in style on his horse drawn carriage, traditional carolers stroll through the village and you can stop and chat with elves. Stop in at one of the local shops and grab some hot cocoa; I think it's going to be chilly!  Visit their website for more information.

Woodland Wonders
Saturday, December 5th, 11am-12:30pm
Cornell Cooperative Extension
Long Pond Greenbelt, Bridgehampton

They're doing it again! The Cornell Co-op always hosts these great events to get you and your kids outside and learning about our environment, both plants and animals. They are intimate and really educational, but fun. These events are FREE, and all you have to do is show up-meet at the "Nature Center Sign" on the Bridgehampton Turnpike north of Scuttlehole Rd. Call for more information: 631-767-5171

Gingerbread House Exhibition
Sunday, December 11am-4pm

Pagen-Fletcher Restoration
143 Hendrickson Avenue, Valley Stream

Stop by and vote for your favorite gingerbread house and grab some inspiration for how to decorate your own. There is also a bake sale for those of us who know our limitations, so bring some cash. If you time it right, you can catch an icing demonstration at 2pm. For more information, call 516-561-2115.

Chanukah Delights
Sunday, December 6, 4:30pm
Mid-Island Y JCC
45 Manetto Hill Rd, Plainview

The Mid Island JCC does a great job promoting family events. And this is no exception. Celebrate Chanukah with the famous children's musician Danna Banana. A candle lighting and family sing along plus refreshments for all make this a can't be missed show. Call for tickets; they are expecting this to be crowded and maybe sell out. 516-822-3535

Hansel and Gretel at the Boulton Center
Sunday, December 6, 2pm
37 West Main Street, Bay Shore

I love taking my kids to theater performed by young actors. They seem to relate more and are far less intimidated. This is a great example. Shorter in length than the Broadway versions, the scripts are usually more well understood by the younger ones, and the art and backdrops are often more creative in color and size as well. This sounds like a great show, and it appeals to both the boys and girls. One note: the show isn't listed on the website, so be sure to call for tickets or more information. 631-969-1101
