Fun & Free Things to Do This Weekend with LA Kids: Kites, Cool Science, and World Records, Oct 8 - 9

It’s one for the record books… make that two! This week Southern Californians have the chance to participate in two different world record attempts. First up: Read for the Record. The Santa Monica Public Library joins with book lovers around the world in an attempt to create the largest shared reading experience. This year’s book is Llama Llama Red Pajama, and it’s a real page turner, filled with lots of llama drama.

Then on Tuesday, get ready to jump! National Geographic Kids partners with First Lady Michelle Obama for Let's Jump, an attempt to break the world record for most people doing jumping jacks. There are multiple jumping off locations throughout SoCal.

Even if you’re not out to break any records, we still have plenty of good times to offer you.  We have cultural festivals, eco-green festivals, book events, concerts, and of course, lots and lots of Halloween tricks and treats. Continue reading to see some of our top choices for this weekend...

Anatolian Cultures & Food Festivals  -  Costa Mesa
More than a dozen civilizations grew and thrived in Anatolia (the area that's now the western portion of Turkey). This four-day festival celebrates the music, crafts, and cuisine of those great cultures (not to mention the playgrounds, rides, and bouncy houses).

Now from something Old World to something cutting-edge new:

New World F.E.S.T. - Santa Monica
What happens when techie science geeks and green environmentalists get together on Santa Monica Beach? The New World F.E.S.T., three days of music, seminars, and sensory indulgence. Kids will love the dinosaur digs and petting zoo; parents will love just about everything else.

Water Harvest Festival - El Segundo
The environmental theme continues, as kids can learn all about our precious natural resource while having a day of fun.

Southeast Asia Day - Long Beach
The Aquarium of the Pacific celebrates the rich culture of Southeast Asia.

Target Free Family Saturday: Up in the Air! - Downtown
Things are looking up at the Japanese American National Museum, as it opens its doors for a free day celebrating kites and kite-making.

CicLAvia - Downtown
Imagine LA without cars.  For a few hours on Sunday, 10.5 miles of road are closed to anything motorized so that people - whether on bikes, on foot, or pushing strollers - rule.

Discover Marina del Rey Day - Marina Del Rey
Discover Marina Del Rey at this annual family and community themed festival.

Reptile and Amphibian Appreciation Day - Downtown
Spend the day with some slitherers and crawlers (and a few reptiles and amphibians as well).

Taste of Encino - Encino
Time to eat! It's a big block party in Encino, with tasty eats, a health and wellness pavilion, and things for the kids to climb, slide, and bounce upon.

As always, there are many more activities listed on our daily events calendar.  Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend!
