Weekday Event Picks for LA Kids: Engineering at the Discovery Cube & the Life Aquatic, February 23-27

2/23/15 - By Jacqueline Stansbury

A week designed for builders and creators of all ages, National Engineers Week is one event, but it's celebrated in two locations in the Southland. The Discovery Cube in Orange County and its newly opened sister branch in the San Fernando Valley both have many interactive activities aimed at young engineers and scientists, including the not-to-be-missed egg dropping contest. For those more interested in the natural world, there are two free aquarium opportunities in Santa Monica and Long Beach, and the one in Santa Monica comes with free food for our kids.

2. Sea Star Feeding and Kids Eat Free – Tuesday
First kids can feed the sea stars at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and then head upstairs to Rusty’s Surf Ranch for a free kid meal with every adult meal purchase. Though small, this aquarium is a local gem with fantastic hands-on activities and an informative, friendly staff.

3. Potted Potter – Wednesday
The award winning Potter Parody (picked a peck of pickled…) packs the entire saga into 70 minutes, and there is still time for a Quidditch match. The show runs through Sunday at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

5. Shark Lagoon Nights – Friday
In Long Beach, the Shark Lagoon is open for free on Friday night (admission to aquarium is separate). Like the commercial says, “Sharks you can touch and sharks you can’t!” Both are irresistible.
