Weekday Event Picks for LA Kids: Easing into 2015 January 5-9
After weeks of chaotic festivities, it’s time to move back into the familiar routine. The kids have mostly returned to school. It’s the first week of a new month, so lots of museums are free. Brick lovers were likely gifted plenty of LEGOs during the holidays, but it is still nice to collect the First Tuesday freebie.
In fact, after the excesses of December spending, it’s a good idea to find those activities around town that don’t require payment. Start this New Year contemplating the night sky stargazing from your own back yard, or, if you want an organized event, head to the Abbott Kinney Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library in Venice. It may be worth spending on one last treat, though, if you still haven't seen Pompeii: The Exhibition at the California Science Center, because this week is your last chance!
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
1. Sidewalk Astronomers – Monday
Weather permitting, the Abbot Kinney branch of the library in Venice hosts a family evening of stargazing. Ponder the cosmos, then take a walk down to the beach and listen to the waves.
2. Los Tres Reyes Magos – Tuesday
This is a celebration of “The Three Kings,” the wise men who brought gifts to the baby Jesus. The Epiphany is the English name for the Christian holiday; down on Olvera Street there is a procession, piñata, free pan dulce, and champurado (Mexican hot chocolate) to celebrate the day.
3. Chill – Wednesday
Winter and the cold weather are still here in SoCal, but CHILL is wrapping up January 11. If you've been planning to get there all season, today may be the day to do it. Next week the ice will be a puddle.
4. Westfield Playdate – Thursday
In Century City, Westfield malls team up with Giggles 'n' Hugs to host a free music and art playdate on the second Thursday of the month. Easy to find by the Coffee Bean (know any moms who need an afternoon pick me up?); and let’s face it, you probably have a gift card burning a hole…
5. Long Beach Museum of Art – Friday
Admission is free today. This museum is housed in an historic craftsman house (1912) and is on a bluff overlooking the ocean. If you don’t like the art, there is always the view.
