Summer Chess Camps and Classes for Kids in Westchester and Rockland

This is the time of year when summer plans and camp choices dominate conversation among parents. But don’t consider yourself stuck if a traditional camp program of sports, swimming and color wars doesn't appeal to your child. With the growing popularity of chess these days, many kids are opting to devote their summers to the game, and there are a number of summer programs that have added it to their curriculum.

We've rounded up five such programs throughout Westchester and Rockland that offer chess classes to school-age kids. Looking for more summer options? Consult our Camp Guide

NSCF Summer Chess Camp – Hartsdale
Located at the Solomon Schechter Upper School, the NSCF Summer Chess Camp offers up to six one-week sessions in air-conditioned classrooms. The camp features both group and individual instruction and a balance of formal chess instruction, group lectures and game analysis with friendly competition. The daily schedule incorporates outdoor activities such as soccer and basketball, and a daily hot lunch is also included in the full-time camp fee. (Lunch is not included in the half-day camp program.)

Challenge Camp - Rye
Ages 4-14
The Rye Challenge Camp offers chess in both the morning section (kids select a 9am and a 10:30am course) and in the afternoon (students select three enrichment options or sports options) sections. The morning Checkmate class is an introduction to chess that enables campers to develop and enhance their skills. Chess notation is taught in order to review games, and the Russian language is even introduced as it relates to the game. The afternoon Chess Challenge course is designed for students to play individual and team matches against opponents of all ages and abilities.

Discover Camp - Hawthorne
Grades 1 and up
The chess course at the Discover Camp is open to students at all levels and they are matched according to ability, regardless of age. Areas of focus include rules of play, reading and writing chess movies, attack/capture/defend, tactics and special moves to name just a few. Three sessions (morning, afternoon and full day are all available in each session) are held in 2016 at the Hawthorne facility: June 27 - July 22, July 25 - August 12 and June 27 - August 12.
