As we enter the dog days of August, there's no better way to spend a weekend in the Hamptons than participating in some local traditions. Dan's Papers hosts the 41st Annual Kite Fly, a perennial local favorite. The East Hampton Sand Castle Contest brings the thrill of creative competition to the Atlantic Avenue Beach. For more seaside fun, visit the South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center for a lesson in beachcombing and sandcasting. Plan a day at the Teepee Day at Downs Farm Preserve on the North Fork for hands on Native American history. Saturday, August 3

The East Hampton Sand Castle Contest - Amagansett
For the 22nd summer in a row, the Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett hosts this contest. Amazing sand sculptures are created by talented people of all ages. Competitors can use any tools that they wish, but finished sand sculptures are comprised of materials that are native to the beach. Categories include children up to age eight (with an adult), teens up to age 15, adults, families, and sand castle building professionals. Trophies and prizes are awarded to the top three groups in each category. All proceeds are donated to the Clamshell Foundation, which provides college scholarships to local youth, and provides emergency food to local families in need.

Teepee Day At Downs Farm Preserve - Cutchogue
Visit this North Fork preserve to learn about Native American history. Help Teepee Ted build a full-sized teepee. Kids sit inside the teepee, touch buffalo skins and bones, play drums and games, and make a necklace. Listen to stories about living on the Rosebud Reservation of South Dakota.  

Girls Who Looked Under Rocks Part 1: Insects - Bridgehampton
Children explore the insect world that fascinated Anna Botsford Comstock - artist, educator, and naturalist. Bring along a notebook or sketchpad to record observations through drawing.

Origami Paper Boat Regatta - Amagansett
At the Amagansett Free Library, learn how to make traditional Japanese origami and create boats to race in a regatta.

Best Of The New York International Children's Film Festival - Water Mill
The Parrish Art Museum hosts this film festival, which features the best global short films for young people 3-18 years of age.

Contra Dance - Shelter Island
An opportunity for kids to learn contra dancing, a unique and fun-filled skill. Featuring live music by Dunegrass and calling by Dave Harvey, who leads the traditional dancing with mandolins, fiddles, and old-time calls.  

Marine Biology Boat Trip - Bridgehampton
Trawl the waters of the bay to learn about its biology and ecology aboard a 45 foot research vessel from Stony Brook University. Help bring in and study fish, and examine tiny plankton under a microscope. Children under 12 years of age must bring along their own life jacket.

Beachcombing And Sandcasting - Bridgehampton
The South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center leads families on a treasure hunt. Learn to identify collected seashells, feathers, rocks, and seaweed. Cast the found objects in Plaster of Paris to create a seaside work of art.

Dan's Papers 41st Annual Kite Fly - Sagaponack
There's no better way to end a summer Sunday at the beach than watching a spectacle of kites in the sky. Long Island Newsday named Dan's Papers 41st Annual Kite Fly one of the Top 50 Family Things To Do during the summer season. Bring a blanket, a beach chair, and a picnic basket and enjoy live music from The Jim Turner band. Party Kidz provides entertainment for kids, including face painting, magic, and jugglers. Prizes are awarded for the most outstanding kites, both homemade and store-bought.

Legally Blonde The Musical - Mattituck
Enjoy this all-youth production at the North Fork Community Theater, which features a stylish sorority girl named Elle Woods, and her Chihuahua Bruiser, who set their sights on Harvard Law School.
