Harold and the Purple Crayon: The Target Storybook Series New Season at Brooklyn Center

4/8/15 - By Judy Young

As part of its 60th anniversary season, the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts is presenting four interactive and affordable theater shows for young children and their families. The Storybook Series, sponsored by Target, includes adaptations of childhood literary classics like The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon, which kicked off the series last weekend, and The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley.

My kids (who are huge fans of Crockett Johnson's popular Harold books) and I were there for the debut!

The performance took place in the spacious Walt Whitman Theater, located on the beautiful Brooklyn College campus. I appreciated the kid-friendly graduated seating. Meanwhile, my eight- and nine-year-olds were mesmerized as five of their favorite Harold books (Harold and the Purple Crayon, Harold's Circus, Harold's Trip to the Sky, Harold's Fairy Tale and Harold's ABC) came to life.

Presented by the Enchantment Theatre Company, the 75-minute play used masked actors, pantomime, magic and large-scale puppetry to seamlessly weave the tales of the brave and resourceful Harold. Much of the action is projected on huge screens behind the actors, however, there were moments where the story jumped off the screen. One such instance: when a dragon literally slid off the screen and became a "real" dragon guarding the castle. My son gasped with joy as he watched! Other highlights included the performance of Harold's ABC that had younger members of the audience calling out the alphabet, trying to guess what Harold would draw for each letter.

This was a much more action-packed and artful presentation of the books than the cartoons my kids are used to—they loved it.

Don't miss the upcoming shows! Here's the lineup:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar on Sunday, April 19

Dinosaur Train LIVE! on Sunday, April 26
