Saturday, February 26th is National Kazoo Day! The book publisher McNally Robinson (who has really been stepping up with loads of kid events latly - should Scholastic be worried?) is celebrating with a Kazoo Concert and activities at their SoHo store. Here's what their site says:
Storytime this week celebrates National Kazoo Day. We’ll read stories about music, sing a few songs, and create our own kazoos. After Storytime, kids can perform with the McNally Robinson All Star Kazoo Band. Hosted by resident storyteller Yvonne Brooks, author of Meet the Goat Kids and The Goat Kids Explore the Woods. For children ages 3-7; craft materials provided. FREE!
The Bowery Kids Series features really fun, interactive, educational, and affordable family shows. This is a venue where every Sunday at noon, parents know they can take their kids to not just see something, but to do something. The cool, intimate space lets kids to get up close and personal with the artists. Kids are often invited onstage to dance, sing, and swing with the performers. After the show, parents and kids are invited to the stage to meet and greet the artists, shake hands, and ask questions. This Sunday, January 27th, Bowery Kids presents...Astrograss from 12-1PM. Astrograss is an interactive, captivating performance featuring a quirky mix of bluegrass, folk, and humor. Highlights include dance contests set to high-energy fiddle hoedowns, musical interpretations of the poetry of Shel Silverstein, and sing-alongs to some of the most beloved songs of all time. All tickets $10 general admission at the door. Doors 11:30. Bowery Poetry Club 308 Bowery (Bleecker-Houston) 6 to Bleecker; B, D, F, V Broadway-Lafayette 212-614-0505 www.bowerypoetry.com Today's NY Times has an incredible list of activities for kids this weekend: The one that really caught my eye is the which is this Bindlestiff Family Cirkus's Cavalcade of Youth Sunday at the Zipper Factory (beware, the link from the Times site is wrong). The performers are all under 21 and in training to join the ranks of Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and more. Acts include "juvenile jugglers, diminutive dancers, adolescent acrobats and a host of other moppets and mummers". Advance purchase tickets are $7 youth / $12 adults and at the door is $10 youth / $15 adults. And, if your kid is inspired, they can always audition. The Bindlestiff Circus is looking for the next generation of variety performers and will help develop your child's act at no cost if accepted! Perhaps not the career choice Grandma had in mind for junior, but you must admit its pretty cool. What are you going to be doing this weekend?
