5 Free Fun Indoor Activities for Kids in New York City

Last month I wrote about play spaces where you can drop in and pay for play, but how about places where you can drop in and not pay? There are still some great places that welcome you to play for free and we've rounded up 5 good ones below. Of course, you should also check out our list of free times at NYC museums so you don't miss out on things like pay what you wish Thursdays at the Children's Museum of the Arts.

Brooklyn resale shop, Still Hip, invites you to make use of their play space pretty much every day from noon to 3pm, but check with their online calendar in case there's a class or event going on. FREE, but they do ask for a dollar or two donation for use of the space. This store is now closed.
The JCC's R&R Shabbat is a fantastic event on Saturdays that is open to all. Every weekend, from 2-5pm, they offer different programs from children's concerts to free indoor play to yoga and even lectures and concerts for adults. This is truly a great activity for everyone in the family and a wonderful offering to take advantage of. Check their site for this week's schedule.
The Maclaren Store in SoHo has playgroups on Tuesday and Thursdays from 11-2. Toddlers and Preschoolers can listen to stories and play with staff. They even get a snack. It's free, all you have to do is reserve a spot ahead of time at 212 677-2700. [discontinued]
Sony Wonder Technology Lab is a free technology and entertainment museum for kids of all ages. They have interactive exhibits, free movie screenings and more.
City Treehouse is offering one free demo class or a free first visit to their playspace. And they have frequent open free times on weekends. Check their calendar for upcoming dates and call to reserve a spot. (212)255-2050

A fourth-generation Brooklynite, Anna started Mommy Poppins in 2007 to help families find the best things to do with kids in NYC, with a particular emphasis on sharing activities that are free, affordable, and enriching. The site, used by millions of families, has grown to become the ultimate resource for parents in the major US cities, plus travel guides for 100s of destinations.
Anna is a believer in the magic of summer camps, traveling with kids, and that you can raise kids on a budget and still have a rich life full of amazing memories. Anna's first Mommy Poppins book, The Young Traveler's Journal and Activity Book, published in 2025 and co-written with her daughter, Amelia Eigerman, brings that ethos to life, in addition to this website.
