5 Off the Beaten Track Holiday Activities in the Bronx

We have already given you the lowdown on the Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden up in the Bronx. Families travel from all over to check out the replicas of major New York landmarks made entirely out of plant parts. It's a truly magical exhibit that appeals to both the young and old. Another bonus? The Train Show is held in the snug warmth of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory glasshouse, therefore it's a perfect holiday attraction no matter how cold it is outside.
The only possible drawback to this amazing annual exhibit? The holiday crowds of course. So, if you're looking for an alternate plan to spend a festive day out and about in the Bronx with your family, you've come the right place. Read on for some attractions that are a nice back-up plan if the line for the Train Show is dampening your holiday spirit.

A lesser-known exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden, Gingerbread Adventures is a fun and educational event which teaches children everything they'd ever need or want to know about what goes into making gingerbread. Kids can check out amazing gingerbread creations or even decorate their own gingersnap cookies. A truly delicious way to spend an afternoon in December...Tuesday to Friday, 1:30 - 5:30pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10am - 5:30pm (through January 11th).
The Little Engine That Could
Another indoor event at NYBG, this puppet show is directed by master puppeteer Ralph Lee and will appear in the Arthur and Janet Ross Lecture Hall. Saturdays and Sundays, December 6 to 21 and daily December 26th to January 2nd at 3pm.
A Christmas Carol
This holiday classic will be presented by the Traveling Lantern Theatre Company at the Bronx Library Center (310 E. Kingsbridge Road) for free. Recommended for children ages 5-12. Saturday, December 6th at 2pm.
Family Art Project
Each weekend, Wave Hill hosts a "Family Art Project." Upcoming projects include how to make your own live-action holiday cards, how to create seasonal gifts and decorations, and how to make your own one-of-a-kind giftwrap. Saturdays and Sundays, 1 - 4pm.
Festival of Lessons and Carols
For families with older children, Fordham University Choir's Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols is not to be missed. Come and sing along to timeless Christmas classics in the historic University Church. Get there early for a seat... this event is free and fills up quickly.Sunday, December 7th at 3pm.
