Winter Break Activities in Fairfield County, CT

1/11/14 - By Katie McKnight

What…pack up and head to Florida for February break? Never!  Nope, this clan is staying put for the upcoming school vacation.  And while the idea of spending some time in Florida is tempting, I love the chance to enjoy local adventures with my kids.  These are the some of the things we’ll be doing over February break here in Fairfield County.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

Curtain Call, Stamford, CT: We have tickets for Curtain Call’s production of Les Miserables next week.  Now, my kids are a bit young to truly appreciate all of the drama in this world famous musical, but hey, it's a world famous musical!  Normally, I wouldn’t take them to an 8pm show, but as bedtimes are much less rigid during vacation week, we’re giving it a whirl.  Ticket prices range from $15-$30.  Kweskin Theater, 1349 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT 06905, 203.329.8207

Penny Candy Stores: I love taking my kids to a penny candy store and giving them $2 to spend.  Now, choosing, budgeting and paying can take them nearly an hour, so I don’t always have the patience for this outing in the midst of the school year.  But I love helping them as they work through this math exercise, and February break is the perfect time to do it.  We like to visit Sweet Rexies in Fairfield, or MacKenzies in New Canaan. Sweet Rexies, 1552 Post Road, Fairfield, CT, 06824, 203.254.3254, MacKenzie’s, 7 South Avenue, New Canaan, CT, 06840, 203.972.1277

New Sports Activities: I love having my kids try different sports, but I can’t stand the idea of signing them up for a whole session of lessons or practices for a sport they haven’t tried out.  School breaks are a great time to try a lesson in some different activities – if the kids like them, I’ll consider signing them up on a longer terms basis.  We are contemplating rock climbing at the SONO Field House and fencing at Wilton Fencing AcademySONO Field House, 365 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Norwalk, CT, 06854, 203.604.9030, Wilton Fencing Academy, Wilton River Park, 5 River Road, 2nd Floor, Wilton, CT 06897, 203. 529.3260

College Sports: I have 3 girls, and I'm always looking for opportunities for them to see older girls in leadership roles.  To that end, we'll be heading to a Fairfield University women's basketball game over break.  Or maybe we'll go to Yale to watch their women's squash team...

Earthplace Drop off Program, Westport, CT: While I'm looking forward to spending vacation week with my kids, we may need a break from one another at some point!  I'll be looking into the drop off programs at Westport's Earthplace.  Their drop off programs run from 9:30-12:30 for kids ages 3.5 through first graders.  The cost for non-members is $50, and the program includes time with animals, science activities and exploration.  10 Woodside Lane, Westport, CT, 06880, 203.227.7253

The Maritime Aquarium Drop Off Program, Norwalk, CT: If you need time to get work done over vacation week, consider the Maritime Aquarium's vacation program. The program runs from February 17th - 21st from 9:30-3:30.  Your child can participate in one or all of the days offered.  $98/day, and campers need to bring their own lunch.  10 North Water Street, Norwalk, CT, 06854, 203.852.0700

The Giggling Pig, Shelton, CT: For just $20 you can drop off your some crafting and fun in this creative art space. The Giggling Pig is open during break on Monday, February 17th  and
Tuesday, February 18th 9:00-12pm, Drop-Off only, RSVP By Email: info@thegigglingpig.com. 478 River Road, Shelton CT 06484

However you choose to spend it, have a wonderful school vacation week!
