My Big Fat Greek Neighborhood: What to Eat and Do with Kids in Astoria Queens
We love Astoria as a family friendy destination neighborhood, but what do you do once you're there? Astoria is best known for its Greek culture and places to eat. Take the N/W train to the Broadway stop for the best kid friendly Greek food this side of the Mediterranean and some fun places to visit after your meal.

Uncle George's Greek Tavern Unfortunately Uncle George's closed in June 2013. This unassuming restaurant on the corner of Broadway and 33rd St has red and white checked table cloths and a traditional Greek menu. Try the Saganaki for starters; it is a fried cheese that is set on fire. How can you possibly go wrong with kids and fried cheese? Order a Greek spaghetti and meat sauce for the little ones while you get more adventurous with the Pastitsio (Greek lasagna) or Stuffed Grape Leaves. When you are finished with lunch, head across the street to the Omonia Café for some classic Greek pastries and coffee.
While you are in Astoria you can also check out:
Museum of the Moving Image – This Museum is at the south end of Astoria right by Kaufman Astoria Studios. You can view the many film exhibits that they have on display.
The Astoria Performing Arts Center has frequent performances of dance and dramas.
Seaburn Books is a local publishing house and bookstore. They are right across the street from Uncle George’s on Broadway. Take the kids and poke around this eclectic local bookstore.
Astoria Park and Pool – Check out the city’s largest public pool at Astoria Park. The kids will love it.(Mermorial Day to Labor Day only)
