Worried about cuts to your children's public school art programs? Upstairs—a recently formed group of young artists and educators—is too. That's why the organization is launching a pilot program of FREE art classes on the Lower East Side this August for children ages 7 to 12.

Starting August 1, Upstairs, which works out of a studio located at 83A Hester Street, will offer FREE weekly children's art classes for four consecutive weeks. The sessions are geared toward enhancing the students' artistic sensibility and creativity, and will focus on a single design aspect: the line and its myriad uses.

The drop-off sessions are taught by professional artists and offered on Wednesdays 4-5:30pm or Saturdays 10:30am-noon in August. All children ages 7 to 12 are eligible regardless of ability; the only requirement is that they commit to attend all four sessions.
