Weekend Fun for Boston Kids: Play Date, Fun Fest, and More, Feb 22-23

Winter break wraps up this weekend, and with it, a full slate of activities for kids and families in Boston. Many of the special events we highlighted in our February vacation roundup continue through the weekend, including Setting Sail at the USS Constitution Museum, Charlestown, the Bugs Bunny Film Festival at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge and Wheelock Family Theatre's Hairspray. National Engineers Week wraps up this weekend, and read on for other activities taking place this weekend, from Family Day at the Mass College of Art and Design to an Engineer-a-Thon at the Boston Children’s Museum. Play Date: Imagination Transformation - ICA - Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston

FREE for families; up to 2 adults per family accompanied by children 12 and under

Families can experience the imagination-filled art work of visual/performance artist Nick Caves. Collect designs you see and your own designs in a sketchbook, then work with visiting artist Ciro Faienza in the Bank of America art lab to create a 3D artwork for transforming your family. Performances held throughout the day in the ICA’s Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater.


Green Patriot Kids! - Design Museum Boston

During the workshop, kids learn about the Green Patriot Posters exhibition, a collection of over 500 posters promoting sustainable-living and taking action against climate change and build sculptures with recycled materials. Bring recycled materials from home - paper, plastic, and cardboard work great. Workshops are free, but register online in advance.


Stony Brook Frozen Fun Fest - Stony Brook Reservation, Boston

Discover the world of Urban Mushing. Join the Boston Snow Dogs and the Yankee Siberian Sled Dog Club in a fun, educational presentation on dog sledding in New England.

  • Meet the Mushers and get friendly with some furry sled dogs
  • Watch and cheer the canine athletes as they run
  • Visit the MIX Radio Winter Wellness Van for great music and free give-aways
  • Free Ice Skating at Bajko Rink from 2pm-3:50pm (bring your own skates)
  • Build a snowman…or a snowdog! Bring your own supplies or share ours.
  • Demonstrations with wheeled rigs, carts and bicycles or sleds, if snow permits.

Georges Island Winter Fortress - Boston Harbor

Explore the winter wonderland of Georges Island during February vacation. If it gets too cold outdoors, warm up in the Visitor Center, and enjoy a short film as well as the exhibits about the island's history. Boston Harbor Island Rangers lead youth in Junior Ranger activities and seasonal crafts.

The boat to this program departs from Long Wharf, Boston. Be sure to arrive 20-30 minutes before departure to allow time for check-in and boarding. Meet at the Boston's Best Cruises Ticket Center.


Engineer-A-Thon with BU National Society for Black Engineers - Boston Children's Museum, Boston

Included with admission

Kids build with dowels, explore materials engineering by experimenting with oobleck, and learn the chemical engineering process of chromatography. Join the Boston University National Society of Black Engineers and try these activities and lots more.


Family Day - Mass College of Art and Design, Boston

Visitors are invited to drop in to enjoy art-making, writing, guided conversations, games, and take-home creations. Activities are tailored to the current exhibition's theme.


The Winter Games - Blue Hills Ski Area, Canton

The Winter Games are coming to the Blue Hills Ski Area. Join in on all-day family fun. Skiers and riders of all ages are invited to test their racing skills, show off their moves in the terrain park, and take part in many more indoor and outdoor winter activities.


Celebrate Chinese New Year - Harvard Square, Cambridge

The pageantry begins in Winthrop Park with a lion dance around the ancient oak tree. Then, follow the parade through Harvard Square, passing red and gold silk lanterns festooning the wrought iron lampposts on Massachusetts Avenue, and onward to The Hong Kong Restaurant for family-friendly food, art and music.
