Mostly Free and Fun Things To Do In CT With Kids This Weekend April 20-21: Earth Day Festivals, Fishing, Meet the Animals

Earth Day is Monday, April 22, and there is no better way to honor mother earth than by educating your children on how to keep her safe and clean. It is the largest environmental event across with globe, with over 100 countries participating. Our beautiful state has several events to mark the occasion.

In New Haven, hop on your bikes and explore parks, greenspaces, city streets, neighborhoods and small towns on the Rock to Rock Earth Day Ride. Choose from eight-mile, twenty-mile or metric century distances; listen to live music and eat yummy treats along the way. At the end, there will be a green expo, outdoor games and more food vendors.

Hamden Middle School is the site for an Earth Day Celebration where you can bring items like batteries and medications to recycle properly. This festival will also include animal demonstrations, a bird walk, crafts made from recycled materials, a fire truck, face painting, food and much more.

Spend an hour cleaning trails and mulching at Earth Day Pitch In Day at New Canaan Nature Center. Plant in the children's garden, learn about composting, hike, meet fowl and four-legged friends at Open Farm Days at New Haven's Common Ground. This free event runs every Saturday through November.

Chinchillas, snakes and other cool creatures will be on display at Meet the Animals at Washington's Institute of American Indian Studies. Make friends with local reptiles, amphibians at the CT Wildlife Afternoon at the Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic. Go on a scavenger hunt, make birdfeeders and more at this free event.  

Saturday marks the opening day of fishing season in CT.  Ages 4-15 can win prizes at Glastonbury's Youth Fishing Derby for the largest, smallest, first caught and many more. Even if you don't want to compete, come out and enjoy an outdoor morning with the family.

In this world of constant technology, we can often forget the simple pleasures like flying a kite. On Saturday, The Greenwich Kite Festival encourages families to bring kites of all shapes, sizes and materials. Ribbons will be awarded to the high fliers.

Warmer weather means tag sales! Get out this weekend and save some cash at the Meriden Daffodil Festival Tag Sale at Hubbard Park. 

April is Autism Awareness Month, and the Yale Center For British Art is holding a special program for families with children on the spectrum. Exploring Artism is a way to learn and look at art in a safe, calm environment and then do a project in the classroom. Ages 5-10 and families are welcome. 

A day of live funk, blues, rock and soul will get your family dancing at Get Down for Newtown: A Benefit Concert for Sandy Hook in Bridgeport. Proceeds will benefit My Sandy Hook Family Fund, an organization built to support the victims' families. 

The Children's Museum in West Hartford celebrates National Astronomy Day on Saturday. Hands-on activities, planetarium shows and a special visit from Curious George will keep everyone entertained.
