OK... so Bismarck, North Dakota is probably not among the first places you think of when looking for a family-friendly destination, but this capital city has a lot going for it. Aside from the state Capitol (which you can visit for free), Bismarck, ND boasts a fabulous zoo and a free history museum. It also has that warm Midwestern appeal and those great accents, similar to what you'd find in Fargo, another great North Dakota town.

1. North Dakota State Capitol

Take a self-guided tour of the place where important North Dakota decisions are made. Parking is free for visitors and walk-ins are welcome. We enjoyed an exhibit on prominent North Dakotans, and were able to go into the state Senate chambers (a great photo op). Fun fact: The 21-story art deco capitol is the tallest habitable building in the state.

2. Dakota Zoo

Attention animal lovers: Bismarck is home to a wonderful zoo that houses 600 mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. We spent all day walking the 90-acre facility that is home to everything from ferrets and pheasants to penguins and prairie dogs. Hop aboard the mini train for a 20-minute educational ride around the park. FYI: The Dakota Zoo is open year-round.

3. North Dakota's Gateway to Science

This hands-on, STEM-friendly science center is a must-do for families. There are exhibits on weather, the universe, human anatomy, and transportation, just to name a few. Nearly everything can be touched and explored. A giant water table with dams, locks, and boats is also a kid favorite.

4. North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum

This expansive (and free!) museum located next to the Capitol features exhibits that celebrate Bismarck's rich history. That includes some cool dinosaur fossils like Dakota, a rare mummified Edmontosaurus with fossilized skin. Other displays focus on the state's early Native American inhabitants, as well as its collection of gems and minerals.

5. McDowell Dam Recreation Area

Visit Bismarck's public beach at this 271-acre park that also has hiking trails, picnic tables, and a playground. We had a blast renting a paddleboat and swimming in the cool, clean water. Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are also available to check out. The park is open year-round, with equipment rentals happening Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

6. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park

History fans will love this state park—the oldest in North Dakota—located about 20 minutes south of Bismarck. Fort Abraham Lincoln is home to a replica Native American village, as well as reconstructed military buildings and George Custer's home (the ill-fated colonel was a post commander here until 1876). Aside from historical tours, the park offers hiking trails, fishing, and a playground.

7. Super Slide Amusement Park

Every year, locals look forward to the seasonal opening of this amusement park that's been in operation since 1967. Just down the street from the Dakota Zoo, the park features attractions like a Ferris wheel, go-karts, kiddie swings, a mini golf course, and North Dakota's only roller coaster. That's in addition to its namesake giant six-lane slide. I highly recommend visiting this nostalgic park!

8. Lewis and Clark Riverboat

Cruise the mighty Missouri River aboard this paddle-wheel-style boat that offers 90-minute daily tours throughout the summer. Dinner cruises feature BBQ meals or pizza, while a brunch tour serves up pancakes and bacon. Travelers can expect some historical narration, along with plenty of scenic views. Children 3 and under are free.

9. Raging Rivers Water Park

Typically open late May through August, this water park is the place to be on a hot North Dakota day (and there aren't that many of them)! With four acres of water slides, a kiddie pool, and a lazy river, kids of all ages will be entertained. Our family's favorite was the giant tube slide tower, with several rides for singles and doubles. FYI: Raging Rivers does not offer refunds for inclement weather.

10. Art Alley 5.5

Get inspired walking through this free public art gallery, located on 5th Street between ​Broadway and Main Avenue. The painted wall murals are large and colorful, and many feature local wildlife themes. It's a great place to take family photos!

11. Sky Zone Bismarck

Parents likely are familiar with Sky Zone, the trampoline park with locations around the country (the perfect places to take energetic kids on a rainy day). The Bismarck franchise features perennial favorites like dodgeball, a ninja warrior course, and a jousting pedestal over a large foam pit. A toddler zone gives little ones their own place to jump and play.

12. Jumped Up

Another great spot for letting the kids burn off energy, Jumped Up is a 6,250-square-foot indoor playground with several inflatable structures. Children of all ages can climb, slide, and jump their way through these bouncy houses. Walk-in passes are sold for one- or two-hour allotments. Socks are required.

13. Theo Art School

Get those creative juices flowing at this local art studio that holds themed events, open studio time, and mommy and me art classes. Participants get to work with an array of materials including acrylics, watercolors, markers, pencils, and pastels. Booking online is recommended.

This Bismarck hidden gem serves great coffee, sandwiches, salads, and quesadillas from a drive-through stand that aims to keep fast food tasting fresh. While many visitors pick up to-go, we enjoyed eating in the casual outdoor space which features a large grassy area, picnic tables, and even a few toys.

15. Butterhorn

For a fancier night out with the fam, we loved this downtown eatery known for its signature Butterhorn rolls (the delicious concoctions are like firmer, more buttery crescents). The dinner menu also includes homemade pastas, steaks, fish, and fried chicken.

16. Space Aliens Grill & Bar

It's all about the intergalactic atmosphere at this casual restaurant that boasts alien sculptures, outer space decor, and an arcade. Little earthlings can order up burgers, hot dogs, and chicken strips while parents can enjoy award-winning BBQ and sandwiches.

17. Brick Oven Bakery

This local bake shop has killer bread, as well as an assortment of great French pastries and coffee. Locals love its cruffins, a mix between a croissant and a muffin. Lunch items include sandwiches and a few soups. Consider ordering online to avoid crowds.

Music to a family traveler's ears: This hotel touts the region's largest indoor water park. Little ones love the frog-themed splash pad, while big kids enjoy the slides, including a 150-footer. There's also a hot tub, an arcade, and two restaurants on-site.

Conveniently located just off of I-94, this Country Inn & Suites also has a small indoor water park where kids can blow off steam swimming and going down the twisty slide. The hotel is pet-friendly and offers complimentary cookies, coffee, and breakfast for guests.

20. Home 2 Suites by Hilton Bismarck

We appreciated spreading out at this spacious hotel that has suites with mini kitchens, free breakfast in the morning, and a nice lobby area. There is no water park on site, but there is an indoor pool. Parking is plentiful and pets are welcome.
