Best Summer Theatre for NJ Families--Aladdin, Cinderella, Dora and more!

6/29/14 - By Rachel Sokol

Take a mini break from the beach and the pool and enjoy some family-friendly live theater this summer. Sometimes we need a little nudge (here's your nudge...) to remind us about the creative power of live performances. There are some great shows playing in July and August--be sure to check one out and sing along! And for even more summer fun, check out our New Jersey Kids Summer Activities Guide.

Aladdin (Pitman)
Hey look! For those Aladdin fans who can't make it to NYC's Broadway this summer, check out a musical performance of the famed story--made famous by Disney--at the Broadway Theatre of Pitman. Performances are Thursday, July 17th, Fri July 18th and Saturday the 19th at 10:00 a.m. and also at Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Ticket info is available online. Note: General Admission tickets for both Friday and Saturday shows can be purchased at the Box Office in advance or the day of the show.

Do Black Patent Leather Shoes... (Pitman)
Also at Pitman is an endearing musical that never quite shone on Broadway--but has a loyal cult following. Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? is a spunky, family-approved musical with five main characters--four nuns and Father O'Reilly. It's a lively, coming-of-age musical set in a Chicago classroom with young adults playing a peppy group of private-school kids. (Fun fact: This happens to be one of my favorite musicals and I'm eager to catch a performance this summer. Performances run from July 11th to August 3rd; ticket info is online.)

Cinderella, Jungle Book, and more (Manahawkin)
The epitome of a princes fairytale, Cinderella is the classic rags-to-riches, girl-meets-and-marries-prince fable that so many little ladies cherish. (Ok, and some adult ladies!) Fans of the Cinderella story can see the story come to life at the Ocean Professional Theatre in Manahawkin. Performances run from  July 15-19th and ticket info is available online. There will also be summer performances of The Wizard of Oz (July 29, 30th and Aug 1), Disney's The Jungle Book (Aug 12th, 13th and 15th), and Sleeping Beauty (Aug 26th and 27th). There really is something for everyone and tickets to any performance are just $10 per person. Steal!

Dora, Winnie The Pooh, Beauty and the Beast, and more (Beach Haven)
There are so many wonderful children's shows running this summer at Surflight Theatre that I don't even know where to begin when listing them. But since I love our readers and their kiddos, I'm going to try! Here we go...catch performances of: Winnie The Pooh Breakfast, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast, Dora The Explorer Live, Willy Wonka. Note: Each show listed runs on various individual dates throughout the summer. The theatre itself is located in Beach Haven/Long Beach Island. Check site for ticket info.

Treasure Island (Hillsborough)
The adorable Somerset Playhouse in Hillsborough is hosting a performance of Treasure Island this summer, which runs weekends from July 18th to August 3rd. Based on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel, Treasure Island has buried treasure (of course), the high seas, pirates, sword fighting, drama, adventure and more--what's not to love? Ticket info is online.
