Back to School Events and Activities in Hartford County

Summer is coming to an end and as we reach the final days we’re all scurrying to squeeze in some last minute fun experiences. There are many back to school activities and great shopping opportunities to help celebrate the return. Here is a list of ideas to help you finish the summer and welcome in the school days.

The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford will be hosting a Back to School Bash August 24-25. Visitors will be able to enjoy face painting, arts & crafts, entertainment and the last chance to see the exhibit MathAlive. Kids will also get to meet Buddy, the friendly T-Rex from the PBS kids show Dinosaur Train. The event is free with a purchase of general admission.

If your family needs to get all their back to school shopping done then now is the ideal time since this week is CT Tax Free Week. August18-24 shoppers can buy items (mostly applying to clothes and shoes) without having to worry about the states sales tax.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out a splash pad or one of the local swimming holes the weather in the upcoming days should be perfect for some swimming and outdoor water fun.

School is back in session and what better way to unwind than at the 4th CT Back to School Beyblade Competition. It will be in Simsbury at the Valley Lodge 36 on September 21 from 1-5pm. Pizza and drinks are available for purchase. The entry fee for this tournament is $5.

Head over to the Plainville Public library on August 22 at 6:30 pm for the Summer Reading Program Finale. There will be a DJ, dancing, games, ice cream and more!

The Little Green Tambourine in Avon has fun events lined up for little ones gearing up for back to school week! On Friday August 23, kids ages 3 and up can attend the Back to School “Kids Night Out” from 5:30-8pm to enjoy crafts, dancing and making dinner. This drop-off event is $35 per child. Their other event is a cooking and art class for school ages kids on Tuesday August 27 from 10-noon. Children will learn how to make muffins for a good after school snack, decorate keychains for their backpacks and decorate notebooks. The cost for this drop off event is $25 per child.
