If you’re looking for a fireworks show to celebrate Independence Day, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is a classic choice. Heading over to the Esplanade in the morning to stake out a spot, enjoying a picnic and the outdoors all afternoon, then in the evening hearing the 1812 overture as fireworks explode in the sky is a Boston tradition families have been enjoying for decades.

But if the sounds and crowds on the Esplanade seem a bit overwhelming, there are plenty of other great options. Lots of towns around Boston put on their own 4th of July displays that are just right for families with young children. Read on for some wonderful local celebrations with fireworks from June 30th through July 4th, and check out other Independence Day activities (an Ice Cream Cruise!) on our events calendar.

Braintree's July 4th Celebration—Braintree

The Braintree July 4th Celebration Committee really does it up big! The parade kicks off at 11:45 followed by festivities beginning at 2pm with games and rides, along with a home run derby. A variety of live music follows. There is a salute to soldiers at 9:30 pm, and – of course – a pyrotechnics display to light up the night starting at 9:30pm.

2018 Independence Day Celebrations at Trum Field—Somerville

Get there early and settle in for an evening of music, fun, and games. The evening ends with a 30-minute fireworks display at approximately 9 pm.

Fireworks at Andover High School—Andover
Tuesday, July 3, 2018
Andover celebrates Independence Day the way I think it should be done: Fireworks on the evening of the 3rd, then daytime fun on the 4th. The festivities start early on the 4th with a pancake breakfast. A parade, games in the park, and a concert follow. You have the whole evening of the 4th to rest and recuperate. You'll be bright eyed and bushy-tailed on the 5th, while everyone else is dragging, worn out from the previous night’s festivities.

Independence Day Concert, BBQ, and Fireworks—Lincoln
Wednesday, July 4, 2018
Lincoln celebrates July 4th all day, with a scenic run, Children’s Bike Parade, Town of Lincoln 4th of July Parade, Boy Scout Cook Out, Town-Wide Swim, soccer, and concert. For an active celebration, this is the place to go. The music and barbeque start at 7pm, with fireworks at 9:15pm. Be aware that parking is $20/car, and it will take a while to get out of there after the fireworks. But there are restrooms, and if you get there early, there’s plenty of space for the kids to run around on the grass.
