Mothers Groups: Where to Meet Moms in Queens
Naira recently moved to Queens with her new baby and the challenges of being a first time mother plus not knowing anybody are proving to be more daunting than she anticipated. She emailed looking for help figuring out how to meet other new mothers in her area of Queens.

Meeting other moms has always been a challenge for me. I feel that just because we have children does not mean I have anything in common with another person. They may not share my values, way of life, or general flare for sarcasm in which case we will never be friends.
Being a first time mom or a new mom to any area can be isolating and difficult. It is important for you and your family to get out and find yourself some mamas to hang with. But, meeting moms in Queens is a unique hurdle unto itself because of the cultural diversity and land mass. Queens’ spread-out neighborhoods make it difficult to meet other parents in your area.
Here are some tips for meeting other mothers in Queens:
Online:
Moms of North East Queens - All are welcome at this meetup group of Queens Moms who organize play dates, and events throughout the year.
Holistic Moms Network of Queens - If you have an interest in children’s nutrition and holistic health then this is the place to be. These moms meet monthly in Astoria to discuss topics relating to children’s health and host a monthly play group as well.
Mothers of Twins Club Queens - provides support, information and resources to mothers of multiples. The club holds monthly meetings at Flushing Hospital at 8pm. Membership is open to all mothers and or guardians of multiple birth children in all stages of parenting. Check out the Club’s website for membership details.
Yahoo Groups - Many individual neighborhoods have online parenting groups that are a great way to meet moms who live near you. GO to the Yahoo groups site and search for your neighborhood and moms or parents andsee what comes up.
Mommy and Me Classes
There are a good grouping of Mommy and Me classes in Queens. If that is your thing, check out Queens Mamas Blog for a list of where they are located.
Places to Just Hang
Indoor play spaces in Queens- are a great place to meet Moms. Go on the weekend or a school holiday and you will be sure to meet moms and not caretakers.
Tips on Meeting Moms
Find a common interest - Just because you are moms does not mean you will have anything in common. Try to participate in things that mean something to you. Meeting other parents will come naturally if you have something to talk about.
Go on the Weekends - Because of the need for most moms to work full time, you have a better chance of meeting moms on the weekends wherever you go.
Once you have met moms now what? - Don’t be shy about reaching out. Plan play dates outside of your classes and meetings to keep your schedule active. If you can’t find a class then start your own. Randi Zuckerwise of Forest Hills started her own baby music class in her home when she couldn’t find one that her mom friends could afford.
