Crafty Gift Ideas for Father's Day In New York City
A reader recently wrote in to ask where they could make clay hand-prints of their child for Father's Day. She had tried those kits, but said they were a disaster for her. We thought doing it yourself was a great idea and wanted to share our answer with everyone.
While there are plenty of paint your own pottery studios all over the city, at most of them you all the pieces are pre-made so you can't make a unique item like a hand print. And most clay studios don't let you just drop in for a day to work if you aren't taking classes there already. But we have scoped out a few pottery places in NYC where you and the kids can just drop in to make a hand print or another nice present for Dad out of clay.

Take the gang to Tribeca Clayworks, Family Clay Day, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm every Saturday. Here they can choose a project that the instructor has in mind or just hand form items from wet clay into anything they want. Then glaze their masterpieces and leave them to dry. Normally clay takes three weeks to harden but at Clayworks they can speed up the process so it takes just one week. Perfectly timed for Father’s Day gifts – if you go this coming Saturday your child’s work of art will be ready the following Saturday, (the day before Father’s Day) leaving just enough time to wrap it up and make a card for gift giving on Sunday.
A couple of tips:
Kids must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver no matter how old they are – this is a drop in program not drop off program.
Clayworks offers this fun family clay day every Saturday, but make sure you allow drying time, you need to wait one week before you can take your pieces home with you. Plan accordingly.

Another idea that is great for infants and toddlers is a visit to Created by You out in Staten Island, a paint your own pottery place that offers “Clay Impressions”, a plaque with your son or daughters hand or foot pressed in. Kids will get to mix a powder with water to make a soft clay, mold it into the desired shape and paint it. Prices for the plaques start at $25.
