10 Fun Things to Do with Kids in Southbury, Connecticut

3/17/14 - By Sherry Pardy

When my husband announced our family's plan to relocate from Southeastern Connecticut (city, seaside life), to the Western end of the state (suburbs and very inland), I felt very unsure how we'd fare.  Where would we live?  What would we do for fun?  How would I ever live without seeing the ocean out my front window?  We ultimately settled on Southbury in western New Haven, and what a fabulous decision we made.  Since our move, we've often said we hardly need to leave town to do anything!  There's so many super cool, fun things to do with the whole family!

Southbury spans 40 square miles, and that includes some spectacular, natural spaces.  Whether you're taking the kids to play ball or tennis, picnicking or hiking, swimming or boating, there's something for everyone!  Ballantine Park is 25 acres of softball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and houses the town pool.  The Bent of the River Audubon Center, offers 15 miles of hiking along the Pomperaug River.  Head to Kettletown State Park for swimming and other watersports on Lake Zoar.  Hike up through Southford Falls State Park to a lookout spot to see bald eagles.   In the winter, cross country ski on the trail in Hidden Pond Park.

As a family that loves a good meal out, we were so happy that dining in Southbury is as easy as deciding what type of food you want!  Denmos Snack and Dairy Bar is open year round and you can't beat their burgers or fried clams.  Maggie McFly's is always a hit with the kids, with their huge menu, equally huge portions and boisterous atmosphere that allows families to ease up on the typical quiet restaurant voices.  When we feel like Mexican food, Senor Panchos is the way to go, complete with sombreros to top off a special occasion.

While it's actually in neighboring Middlebury, no summer is complete without at least one visit to Quassy Amusement Park.  For any former locals, yes, Friday nights are still a quarter and many rides, including the antique carosuel, are still in operation today!

A little local secret?  Check out some reading material at the 90,000 volume Southbury Public Library, which doesn't charge for overdue books.  Shhhhh!

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned rider, Southbury is home to some of the area's premiere equestrian centers that accomodate riders of all ages and abilities.  Brushy Hill Farm, Sabill's Morgan Horse Farm, Willow Creek Farm, Rolling Ranch and Mountain Valley Equestrian center all offer lessons, boarding, even birthday parties for your little horse lover!
