This weekend kicks off a whole host of special events, starting with April vacation and Patriots Day, to the Boston Marathon, the opening of the Swan Boats and Earth Day celebrations. Read on for our top picks, and be sure to check our calendar for more activities.

The Miracle Worker - Wheelock Family Theatre, Boston
Opens Friday, 4/13

The touching, humorous and dramatic play tells the inspiring story of Helen Keller and her devoted teacher, Annie Sullivan.

Performances are Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm, and during school vacation week at 1pm. $20-$30


Swan Boats Opening Day - Boston Garden, Boston

A welcome sign of spring, the Swan Boats grace the waters of the Boston Public Garden today. Swan Boats drivers paddle passengers around the Public Garden Lagoon for a peaceful, 15-minute cruise. Adults $2.75; Seniors $2; Children (2-15) $1.50


Rolie Polie Guacamole - Amazing Things Arts Center, Framingham

Rolie Polie Guacamole is a hip “kin die” band from Brooklyn, NY. Its high energy, interactive shows are a mix of funk, rock and folk music mashed into original tunes about natural living, eating healthy and staying active. Kids love dancing along to their newest hits “Kangaroo and Billy Too” and “Triathlon” and the whole family will enjoy their remarkable renditions of Harry Nilsson’s “Coconut” and Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is your Land.” $8-$10


Spring Fling Crafts - Mall at Chestnut Hill, Chestnut Hill

Kids have their own workshop during the annual Step Into Spring: Garden & Flower Show. Visit the richly planted gardens, stone sculptures, unique garden settings and beautiful floral arrangements in common areas throughout the mall, and then take part in arts and crafts that incorporate spring flowers and bright colors. Ships at Sea Celebration - Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester
Saturday, 4/14

The museum hosts a day of events that celebrate ships and the sea. Activities include songs of the sea and ships, led by David and Linnea Coffin (11am) and drop-in art and history activities (12n-2pm). FREE


Vanessa Trien and The Jumping Monkeys - Regent Theatre, Arlington

Young fans jump, dance and sing in the aisles to the sounds of Vanessa Trien and her lively Jumping Monkeys Band’s movin’, grooving’ original kids’ music. Adults $10; Children $8


Destiny Africa Performances - Boston Children’s Museum, Boston

The Destiny Africa Children’s Choir from Uganda performs several contemporary and traditional African songs, drumming and dances. It is up close and personal chance to learn the stories of how these children’s lives were transformed. Performances at 1pm, 1:30pm and 2pm. Free with admission
