5 Animation Classes for Kids in Westchester

Whether or not your child grows up working for Pixar, stop-motion animation is a fun way for kids to explore their creativity while actively using technology. We've gathered five classes in Westchester that teach kids of all ages how to create short stop-motion animation films.

Pelham Art Center - Pelham

Ages 8-12
Jump-start your young one’s imagination with the Stop-Motion Animation class at the Pelham Art Center. Kids can pursue their creative dreams by learning the fundamentals of iStop Motion software to create their own stop-motion animation short. They will be guided through the key steps of creating an animated short with storyboarding, set design and construction, step-by-step movement of the character, filming and editing. The course wraps up with a world premier of their project at the end of the semester!

The Katonah Art Center is where kids in grades 6-12 get to have “Aha!” moments of creativity and discovery while learning the basics of Flash Animation. They will be taught how to bring characters, designs and drawings to life and guided through the process of creating their very own short films.

The Digital Arts Experience – White Plains

Ages 13-16
Teens looking how to create traditional moving images with drawings can do just that at the Digital Arts Experience in White Plains. The class is kept simple in its approach so students begin with the basics like showing a simple bouncing ball, moving on to stick figures, and finally advancing to a project where they can add as much detail as they like. The DAE also offers a Lego Stop-Motion Animation class for 6-8 year olds tht focuses on the fundamentals of animation like timing and spacing. Both classes offer half and full sessions.

JCC Mid-Westchester – Scarsdale

Grades 4-6
Kids can build their creative confidence at the JCC Mid-Westchester by learning how to use Scratch, a graphical programming language developed at MIT. By the end of the course, students will create their own animations to share with the community.

Rye Arts Center – Rye

Ages 8-11
The Rye Arts Center jam packs every session of its Lego Stop-Motion Animation class with information about concepts, software and equipment necessary to make stop-motion animation. Kids will collaborate together to create short movies as well as finish their own by the end of the session. There’s also a 3D Animation with Blender class offered at the center where students will learn the basics of computer animation. It covers modeling, animating, lighting and rendering in 3D to create animations.
