As the air has started to cool, the humidity has lifted, leaves are changing colors, and we are surrounded everywhere by the flavors of pumpkin spice, fall is certainly in full swing. There's plenty for Philly preschoolers to do from fall festivals to apple picking, corn mazes, and Halloween fun. Pick your perfect pumpkin, take a scenic train ride, or enjoy some fall-themed treats. Whether your child enjoys ghosts and ghouls, gentle haunts, or a not-so-scary Halloween, you're sure to find something to please everyone in your family. We've rounded up some of our favorite fall-themed fun specifically for preschoolers.
Magic Mornings- Abington, PA
Bring your child (ages 2-4) to Briar Bush Nature Center on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, September 13 through December 22, 2017 for a morning of nature walks, crafts, games, and stories. Snacks are provided.
Spooky Mini Golf at Franklin Square-Philadelphia, PA
Fridays through Sundays during the month of October, bring the whole family to spooky mini golf at Center City's only mini golf course. Fog, lights, music, and surprises make this event extra festive.
Scarecrow Walk and Design Contest at Morris Arboretum- Philadelphia, PA
From October 7-31, 2017, visit the Morris Arboretum for its 9th annual Scarecrow Walk and Design Contest. Take a stroll along Oak Allee and vote for your favorite from over 30 entries.
Storybook Land- Egg Harbor Township, NJ
Step into the magical world of tales and nursery rhymes when you bring your family to Storybook Land. October 1-29, 2017, Thursday-Sunday enjoy hayrides, a hay maze, and pumpkin decorating in a beautiful setting of childhood wonderment. The last weekend of October, kids get a free trick-or-treat bag to collect treats throughout the park!
New Hope and Ivyland Railroad Trick-or-Treat Train- New Hope, PA
Come dressed in your favorite Halloween costume for this 45-minute train ride. Allow the kids to trick-or-treat around the New Hope train station afterwards for even more fun surprises! This event runs on certain days October 13- 31, 2017.
Woodmere Art Museum Straw Maze- Philadelphia
Woodmere's straw maze, open now through October 29, 2017, is geared towards children ages 4-11, and encourages kids to play, climb, and jump! For themed fun, visit on October 21 when the maze is transformed into Harry Potter's world of wizardry for Chestnut Hill's Harry Potter Festival.
Wilmington and Western Railroad- Wilmington, DE
For a relaxing afternoon, surround yourself in the beautiful colors of fall foliage, and take a ride on the Wilmington and Western Railroad. Enjoy a 1.5 hour ride or, if you have older kids, extend it for another hour, which will take you all the way to Hockessin. Trains run on specific dates and times October 7-November 5, 2017.
Sesame Plac Spooktacular- Langhorne, PA
For Halloween fun that's not quite so spooky for the little ones, visit Sesame Place September 22 through October 29, 2017. The entire park is transformed into a Halloween-themed destination.
Dorney Park The Great Pumpkin Fest- Allentown, PA
If your kids enjoy It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, then Dorney Park is the place to come this fall! Your entire family will enjoy scare-free Halloween activities with the Peanuts gang.
West Chester Railroad- West Chester, PA
For more railroad fun, enjoy the Fall Foliage Express on the West Chester Railroad. On Saturdays and Sundays in October, kids are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to receive a special treat. The Fall Foliage Train runs select dates and times September 24- November 12, 2017.
Knoebels Hallo-Fun- Elysburg, PA
With everything from scary haunts to mild attractions, Knoebels offers something to suit everyone's taste during their Hallo-Fun weekends (October 13-29, 2017). Enjoy tasty treats, games, and, of course, rides. There are special treat stops for children 12 and under in costume. For more fall fun, check out the Covered Bridge Festival happening October 5-8, 2017, which features arts and crafts vendors throughout the day and spooky rides at night.
Hagley October Hay Rides- Wilmington, DE
Throughout the month of October, marvel at the bold colors of fall during a scenic hayride along the Brandywine. Create crafts and see a gunpowder explosion, authentic roll mill, and working nineteenth-century machines.
Wee Ones at Winterthur- Wilmington, DE
For some indoor fun for your smallest ones, come to Winterthur twice a month through the end of November for themed crafts, music, and movement for children ages 3-5.
Boo at the Zoo- Philadelphia, PA
Children can come in their favorite costume to enjoy a trick-or-treat safari at the zoo! Tour the Extinction Graveyard to learn about the extinction of species around the world. Adults will enjoy the hot apple cider and other fall treats available for purchase throughout the zoo. This event runs Saturdays and Sundays October 21-29, 2017.
Witches of Narberth Scavenger Hunt- Narberth, PA
On October 28, 2017, from 1-4 PM, visit the shops of Narberth where thirteen witches will make an appearance. Kids can search the town to find them while collecting treats on their walk. Prizes are awarded to kids who can find them all!
Toddlers in Nature at Tyler Arboretum- Media, PA
On select dates September-November, toddlers 18 months-3 years-old can enjoy a fall-themed nature class at Tyler Arboretum. Themes include Busy Little Squirrels, Spectacular Spiders, Gobble Gobble, and Clever Crows.
Little Chefs at Tyler Arboretum- Media, PA
For slightly older toddlers (age 3-6), this bi-weekly class is the perfect introduction to cooking. With fall themes including Appetizing Apples, Crazy for Cranberries, Pumpkins, and more- get ready to bring some tasty treats home after this class.
Pumpkinland at Linvilla Orchards- Media, PA
Take a hayride, pick out a pumpkin, visit the corn maze or straw bale maze, and more at Linvilla Orchards this fall. In October, don't forget to take a Hayride to the Witches' House; don't worry- they're friendly!
