The Handcraft Workshop- Philadelphia
This is a perfect option for the beginner who's not sure sewing is really for them. With Sewing 101, a three week class where students will learn the basics such as how to use a sewing machine, and how to cut and pin a pattern, while making a pillowcase, a tote bag and a pencil case in the process. Once they have the basics down, they can start taking classes that focus on more complicated projects, like Kid's Pajama Pants.

Butcher's Sew Shop- Philadelphia
Butch's Sew Shop will create a little sewing pro with their hugely popular junior 8 week sewing classes that are offered weekday afternoons and weekends. Participants will learn hand sewing and machine sewing, as well as skills such as embroidering, sewing buttons, and appliquing, while they create fun projects like bags, stuffed animals, and pillows.  

Made Jr.- Philadelphia
Perfect for the teenage fashionista. An afterschool program of the Made Institute, Made Jr. has programs designed to prepare teens who want to increase their fashion credentials. With programs in garment sewing, fashion illustration, Adobe Creative Suite, fashion portfolios, and even fashion show production, if fashion or design school is in their future, get them prepared here first.  

Woodworking

Philadelphia Woodworks- Philadelphia
If drills, saws and lathes get the creative juices going, then check out the schedule of kids classes at Philadephia Woodworks.  A membership-based professional workshop, Philadelphia Woodworks's kids' classes focus on learning through creating a project such as a tool box, desk clock, bookshelf, stool, and more.  

Clay

The Clay Studio- Philadelphia
This professional studio offers kids classes on Saturdays. There, kids can learn the essential clay techniques of pinch and coil, slab construction, and throwing on the wheel in one day workshops or weeklong camps.  For anyone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty and would like to see what they can make, this is the place for them.  

Main Line Art Center- Haverford
This art center has an entire catalog of kids classes, ranging from painting to mixed media and animation, but one of the highlights is the clay studio. There, kids 4 and up can make their own sculptures, vessels, and pots. There's even Clay Make & Take evenings for parents and kids to play with clay together. Class lengths vary from one day workshops to 8 weeks plus.       

Art

Art classes abound.  Art centers like the Abington Art Center, Main Line Art Center, and the Fleisher Art Memorial offer classes in a variety of mediums, including paint, clay, textiles, metals, glass, and even 3-D printing. The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art offers free family art workshops on Sunday afternoons from 2-4 PM that are worth checking out, and Saturday classes in painting and animation for middle school students.
