Weekend Events for Kids on Long Island, November 20-22: Celebrate the History of the Holiday with your Kids

11/19/09 - By

This weekend is technically the last weekend we have before the Holidays are officially upon us. Next week at this time, you may be hitting your favorite super store or shopping mall scouting out the best deals (or maybe not). And yet, the more we parents get caught up in the pace and commercialism of the Holidays, so do our kids. So this weekend, grab the kids and check out some of the coolest ways to appreciate and celebrate the History of the Holidays, Long Island Style.

Old Thanksgiving in Old Bethpage
Saturday, November 21-Sunday, November 22, 10am-4pm
Old Bethpage Village Restoration
Round Swamp Road, Bethpage

Celebrate Thanksgiving like they did in 1863. We've written about Old Bethpage Restoration plenty of times before, and that's because it is such a great place. It's like a re-enactment of the past right in front of your eyes. And this weekend, you can see how Thanksgiving feasts were prepared on equipment in the 1860's. If you're there in the afternoon, stop by the Noon Inn for children's story hour. Admission is $10 per adult and $7 per child age 5-12 (5 and under are FREE). Visit their website for more information.

Native American Thanksgiving Event
Sunday, November 22, 1pm
Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum
Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor

We love the CSH Whaling Museum, partly becuase it is located in the cutest village on the North Shore, ad partly because it is ideal in terms of being age appropriate, size appropriate and hands on for children. This weekend, celebrate Native American Heritage month and meet a local Native American Indian who will share tales and stories about living as an INdian and the first Thanksgiving. Plus-your kids can make a traditional NAtive American necklace to take home. Click here for more information.

First Thanksgiving
Sunday, November 22, 1pm
Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary
134 Cove Rd, Oyster Bay

With a beautiful forecast on tap, head up to Oyster Bay to learn about the First Thanksgiving and Native American Indians. You can walk through the beautiful woodlands and learn about the native people as well as sample traditional Native American journey cake. Admission is just $3. If you want to jump start your Holiday fever, head down to the annual boat parade on the Patchogue River this Sunday. The Annual parade of decorated boats is sure to put you in the Holiday Sprit, and especially for you Mommies out there, this year's theme is "A Child's Christmas."
