New Jersey Weekend Events for Kids August 14-16: Free Kayaking, Shorebird Walk, County Fair, Pony Rides and More

8/13/09 - By Desiree

This weekend there's a bounty of terrific free things to do with the kids in New Jersey. Enjoy all the traditional fun of the County Fair at the fabulous Van Saun Park, free kayaking on the Jersey side of the Hudson, and a free birdwatching walk (but calling it a safari makes it more fun). Have a great weekend.

The big event of the weekend is the Bergen County 4-H and Master Gardener's County Fair at Van Saun Park.  Van Saun Park is a fabulous destination in itself with a huge playground, zoo, kid-sized train ride around the zoo, carousel, and even pony rides.  Add to that a county fair with events like hatching baby chicks, butterflies, watermelon eating contests, crafts and face painting, and water balloon toss and you will never want to leave!  The event takes place from 10am to 4pm on Saturday (rain date is Sunday August 16). Best of all is that admission and parking is free (though bringing a non-perishable food donation to benefit a local charity is encouraged).

For another fun outdoor adventure, go to the Liberty State Park Interpretive Center for one of their free programs.  The small nature center has an outstanding staff that will take you to really connect with nature within Liberty State Park.  On Saturday the park rangers are offering a Summer Shorebird Walk.  Kids should bring their binoculars (or borrow some from the center) to spot and identify summer shorebirds in the park and along the Hudson River. You must register in advance by calling 201-915-3409.

If you are looking for some wet fun and haven't been kayaking yet this season, try it out for free in Hoboken!  From 1pm to 5pm on Saturday the Hoboken Cove Boathouse will provide free boats, life vests and tips for new kayakers.  Kids should be able to swim, come dressed to get wet, and wear plenty of sunscreen.
