NYC Kids Shows: Children's Theater Listings for Winter 2010

No matter what age they are, kids really have good theater in this town. New York City is uniquely set up to provide top quality children’s entertainment, thanks to its host of actors, musicians, puppeteers and storytellers happy to perform for the little ones. Better yet, these productions are created to specifically engage a young child and many of the shows are interactive, usually about an hour in length and generally affordable. If you haven’t taken your child to live theater performance yet, check out this list of shows being performed this winter and get going.

TADA Youth Theater:

B.O.T.C.H: A jazzy musical performed by the award winning TADA youth theater which is comprised of NYC kids. The show is a revival of one of their most popular performances and tells the story of the Bureau of Turmoil, Chaos, and Headaches that hang out under the NYC subway. One hour in length and suited for all ages.

Wide Awake Jake: The musical story of Jake – the boy who can’t fall asleep and many adventures he has while trying. About one hour in length and suited for all ages.

The Magic Pot: Three Tales From China: The New York debut of a young girl’s musical adventure through ancient Chinese Tales that show her the truth about life, honesty, and happiness.   One hour in length and suited for all ages.

The Paper Bag Players Great Mummy Adventure: Join the gang as they travel to Egypt. The sketch-format show also includes a reinterpretation of the favorite “When Winter Stayed Too Long” and lot of new stuff like “Amy’s Chicken” where her bright yellow, 8 foot tall chicken disappears. The classic New York City troupe will have little culture vultures in stitches with their comical, high-energy performance and parents will love their special brand of funky, recycled minimalism. One hour in length and suited for ages 4 through 9.

Sensory theater using state of the art technology to illustrate the life cycle of a caterpillar. The garden responds in real time to the two dancers movements. 50 minutes in length. Suited for ages 3 to 8 (Performance takes place at the New 42nd Street Studios)

Pinkalicious: The Musical: The famous musical, based on the book of the same name has been delighting little girls and their families for 3 years. Produced by the Vital Theater Company, the musical about a girl who eats pink cupcakes until she turns pink is closing on February 28th. If your daughter hasn’t seen it yet, hurry it up. One hour in length.

Tea with Chachaji: Presented by Making Books Sing, this musical is based on the book Chachaji’s Cup. The story of Neel and his family’s precious teacup that travels with them as they move from Pakistan to India and eventually to Queens. Music is performed on traditional Indian instruments. Appropriate for ages 8+.
