Great Bookstores for Kids on Long Island

8/14/12 - By brooke

Both Nassau and Suffolk counties have some great libraries. Long Island also has some pretty amazing bookstores. Several years ago, I fell in love with Books of Wonder in NYC, a truly amazing place to while away a few hours with a kid. Now, every time I explore a new town, I look for an independent bookstore to duck into and enjoy. Despite the movement toward digital books and educational apps, the look and feel of a beautifully illustrated book has not yet been replaced and there are some fantastic indies, as well as chains, on Long Island that specialize in providing this experience.

Barnes & Noble
multiple locations
Although I prefer to support independent bookstores when I can, I can’t deny that Barnes & Noble is successful for a reason. Several of their locations have large children’s sections and often do author events.  Many locations also have story hour or other themed activities, which is a nice treat as well.

BookHampton
41 Main Street, East Hampton, 631-324-4939
93 Main Street, Southampton, 631-283-0270
20 Main Street, Sag Harbor, 631-725-8425
50 Love Lane, Mattituck, 631-315-5064
This Long Island gem has been serving the East End for 40 years. Each store has an extensive children’s section and a knowledgeable staff, and offers regular children’s events, including its Great Books for Great Kids programs, one of which has actor Alec Baldwin come in to the East Hampton store and read to the children.

Book Revue
313 New York Avenue, Huntington
631-271-1442
Arguably the best bookstore on Long Island, Book Revue has a fantastic children’s section and does many events for children and adults. My daughter will never forget meeting Robin Preiss Glasser at a Fancy Nancy event, where she got to dress up, learn to walk the runway, balancing a banana on her head, and have her book signed.  The events are always engaging and run exceptionally well.

Cottontails
113 A Main Street, Stony Brook
631-689-9147
This children’s boutique has beautiful clothing, toys and other gift items, as well as some unique books. Nestled in Stony Brook Village, near the historic post office, Cottontails is definitely worth a visit.

The Dolphin Bookshop
299 Main Street
Port Washington
516-767-2650
The Dolphin Bookshop is a Port Washington fixture, celebrating its 65th year. It holds a multitude of events, and has a cafe in the store. One event worth highlighting is the weekly or sometimes biweekly “Stories with Kelsey,” which features storytelling through movement and music. Classes are $5 or $40 for 10 sessions. They are well attended and very much enjoyed by all.

Montauk Bookshop
37 The Plaza
Montauk
631-668-4599
This is a little gem that offers a nice selection of children’s books. You can also find sections that feature Long Island books, as well as books about marine life. This is a wonderful addition to Montauk’s Plaza.
