Weekday Picks for Boston Kids: Hockey, Papermaking, and a Princess Party; Feb 6-10

2/5/17 - By Kelley Heyworth

There's some messy weather in the forecast, so it will be tempting to hang at home when there isn't someplace you need to be this week. But with a wintry mix of exciting hockey, Snow Queen appearances, a princess ball, and more on the horizon too, there's sure to be some event to challenge your hibernating instincts. I'm hoping to venture to the Children's Science Discovery Museum in Acton, where kids will be encouraged to take the concept of "homemade" valentines to a whole new level on Wednesday by crafting their own paper from recycled paper pulp. If you're looking for more activities, mark down (with a red crayon, of course), one of these events from our Valentine's Day lineup. Those cute cards aren't going to decorate themselves.

Monday 2/6, Beanpot Hockey Tournament - Boston
The Super Bowl isn't the only sporting event showcasing Boston's best athletes this month. There are plenty of good seats left for Monday night's men's playoff round of the classic Boston Beanpot Hockey Tournament, featuring Harvard, Northeastern, Boston College, and Boston University (ranked number 3 in the nation right now). The puck for the first match, between Harvard and Northeastern, drops at TD Garden at 5 pm—comfortably before bedtime, for most. (All ages; ticket prices vary)

Tuesday 2/7, Babywearing Tour of Gore Place - Waltham
If the cycle of feeding, changing, and napping is making it feel like Groundhog Day is lasting all month long, strap the baby into the car seat, pack your favorite sling or carrier, and head over to Gore Place. The folks at the beautiful estate in Waltham are hosting a special babywearing tour, which begins in the carriage house with coffee and snacks and proceeds into the 1906 mansion, where a docent will share stories of the home's rich history. (Parents and babies welcome, though siblings are discouraged; tickets are $12)

Wednesday 2/7, Make a Mess: Papermaking - Acton
As part of the Discovery Museum's STEAM (science, technology, art, and math) programming, kids will sculpt, squish and press recycled paper pulp into truly lovely (and usable) new paper from 2 to 4:30 p.m. With every sheet being a true "original," the paper can serve as the basis for some very special valentines. (All ages; FREE with regular museum admission)

Thursday 2/7, The Snow Queen - Brookline
Before there was Elsa, there was Hans Christian Andersen's beautiful, icy villainess, who captures a village boy in her palace before the child is eventually rescued by his brave friend. On Thursday at 10:30 a.m., the Puppet Showplace Theater will host the Boston debut of the Eulenspiegel puppet company's colorful adaptation, which includes vibrant costumes, music, and lots of audience interaction. Shows continue through the weekend. (Recommended for ages 4 and up; tickets are $12)

Friday, 2/8—Princess Day - Hanover
Tell your child it's time to don her most majestic gown (if she isn't wearing it 24/7 already). The South Shore Children's Museum is hosting a Princess Party, complete with storytime and crafts at 10:30 a.m. and a "royal ball" at 11 a.m.
