Few experiences can ignite a child's imagination like soaring through the sky. For kids interested in aviation, the Young Eagles Program offers an incredible—and completely FREE—opportunity to introduce kids to the thrill of flight. My son has taken part in a few Young Eagles flights, and every time he touches down, he’s buzzing with excitement (and not just from the engine).

Whether your child dreams of being a pilot or just wants a cool new story to tell, Young Eagles provides an unforgettable experience. Almost 30,000 of today’s licensed pilots under the age of 40 can trace their aviation interest to an initial EAA Young Eagles flight. It's more than just a plane ride—it's an inspiring introduction to aviation for youth.

What is the Young Eagles Program?

The Young Eagles Program was launched in 1992 by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) to give children their first experience flying in a general aviation aircraft. Since its inception, more than 2.4 million young people have taken to the skies through the program, thanks to the generosity of volunteer pilots across the country.

Who is Eligible for the Young Eagles Program?

Any child between the ages of 8 and 17 is eligible to participate in these free flights for kids. There are no costs involved, and no prior aviation experience or background is required. Kids from all walks of life are encouraged to explore the world of aviation through this initiative.

How Does the Young Eagles Program Work?

Volunteer pilots—many of whom are EAA members—donate their time, aircraft, and fuel to provide these kid's airplane rides. Flights are coordinated through local EAA chapters or special Young Eagles rally events. As a parent, all I had to do was choose a location, sign up online, and fill out a simple registration and permission form for my son.

Finding a Young Eagles Flight Near You

To find an EAA Young Eagles flight, visit the Young Eagles website and use its flight locator tool. You can search by ZIP code to find upcoming events or local chapters offering flights. Some events happen monthly, while others are seasonal.

Preparing for Your Young Eagles Flight

Before your child’s flight, make sure they dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable clothing. Arrive early to allow time for check-in and pre-flight discussions.

What to Expect During a Young Eagles Flight

Each flight typically lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. Before takeoff, the pilot explains how the aircraft works, reviews safety procedures, takes Young Eagles on a "walk-around" pre-flight inspection, and answers any questions. During the flight, kids often get a chance to take the controls (under supervision), which was my son’s favorite part! Afterward, they receive a certificate as a keepsake and a logbook to track their flight hours.

Continuing Aviation Education After Young Eagles

Young Eagles participants can take advantage of free access to Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course, scholarships, flight camps, and more. My son continues to explore aviation through online courses and local aviation camps and events.

Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course is a self-paced, FAA-approved program with real-world video lessons that help students ages 13 and up prepare for the FAA Knowledge Exam. After completing the course and passing the exam, students can receive an EAA reimbursement. Signing up is simple with an access code from their Young Eagles logbook.

Additionally, the Ray Aviation Scholarship, offered through EAA chapters, provides up to $12,000 for flight training and has helped 600 students earn pilot certificates, with an 80% success rate. Scholars also receive a Lightspeed Zulu 3 headset as they hit key milestones.
