Natural indigo dye kits can easily be found online; you will also need rubber bands, gloves, a large bowl (tarp, a stick and string optional) as well as the cotton clothing or cloth you would like to dye.

1. The dyed pattern will depend on how you fold your fabric. You can experiment with different techniques and then tie it or wrap rubber bands to hold the pattern in place. Try an accordion fold for a striped pattern or pulling up random sections for a circular pattern. You can also try tightly wrapping the clothing around a long stick and tying for an ombre effect.  

2: Prepare the dye bath and follow your dye's directions. After your items have been in the dye the recommended length of time, remove your garment. Watch it turn yellow for a few seconds as the color oxidizes and then turns the beautiful indigo blue. 

3: Remove all rubber bands, string and sticks to reveal your patterns! While still wearing gloves, rinse items thoroughly under water and hang to dry.

This art project doesn’t have to just hang on the wall at home. Children can parade proudly in their newly re-purposed duds.
