Weekend Events for Kids on Long Island, August 14-16th: Free Outdoor Movie, Bluegrass Festival and More

With the days getting shorter, there is a hint in the air that Summer is starting to wind down. Take advantage of these last few weeks by getting outside this weekend and enjoying some of the great events being offered across the Island this weekend-

Starlab-It's the last weekend to take advantage of the Inflatable Planetarium The Long Island Children's Museum has on loan from The American Museum of Natural History. Without keeping your kids up late at night, they'll be able to enjoy views of the stars during the day. Check the website here for showtimes. Entrance fees to the museum are reasonable ($10), but we suggest becoming a member so it's free everytime you go. To view the Starlab, there is an additional fee of $3 for your kids.

Free Outdoor Movie-If your kids aren't wiped out, head to Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa for a free showing of Night at the Museum 2. It's a great family movie for families with kids in early primary school and older. Bring a picnic blanket or your beach chairs and enjoy. Admission is FREE. And, by the way, this is a great park if you want to show up early and walk around the lake, barbeque, or get in some tennis or swimming (you can pay one day admission fees for use of the pool as a non resident of the Town of Oyster Bay)

Huntington SummerArts Festival-Head to Hecksher Park in Huntington for a cool family evening out. The Alloy Orchestra is performing live accompaniment to the classic silent film "Black Pirate" Using all kinds of instruments The Alloy trio provides the sounds of the movie. Dressing up is encouraged-so grab those little pirates and your picnic blankets, pack up dinner and head up to Huntington.

Long Island BlueGrass Festival-Our pick for the best Music Festival this weekend offers interactive exhibition tents, a children's music stage, plenty of festival food and more. You can bring a picnic lunch if you choose. There is an admission cost of $10 per adult for a day, but kids 12 and under are FREE. For a schedule of bluegrass musicians, click here

Montauk Lighthouse Re-enactment Weekend-If you're out East this weekend, hit the famous Montauk lighthouse for some cool events and exhibitions as part of LIghthouse Weekend. With unique activities like a boat safety and know tying demonstration and trap fishing demonstration to favorites like face-painters, it sounds like a fun way to check out this famous destination in Montauk. If you are tall enough to climb the lighthouse tower, you have to pay-admission is $4 for kids and $8 for adults. Check out the website for more details.
