The infectious beats, catchy lyrics, and exhilarating choreography of K-pop have seemingly taken over the world. Groups like BTS and Blackpink have cemented their status as international superstars, and K-pop's fan base is diverse and wide-reaching. KPOP the musical feeds into this fascination, taking the audience behind the scenes into the lives of three fictional K-pop artists—two groups and one solo artist—depicting the blood, sweat, and tears it takes to be successful.
The show originally premiered on off-Broadway six years ago as an immersive, rambling experience. Since then, KPOP the musical has been streamlined into a tighter, more cohesive production focusing on just a few themes. The storyline follows RTMIS, boy band F8 (pronounced "Fate"), and former wunderkind MwE as each struggles with professional and personal challenges on the cusp of their New York debut. MwE is played by Luna, a Korean recording artist who started her career with the K-pop group f(x). The rest of the cast includes a mix of former K-pop stars and Broadway actors.

The set for KPOP is unique for a Broadway show.
Of course, it wouldn't be K-pop without some serious synchronized dancing and upbeat pop songs. The vocals of all the actors are amazing. One of our favorite songs was "This is My Korea." The dance routines are electrifying, and the music got the audience clapping and dancing along, especially during the mini-concert at the end of the show.
While the dialogue is in both Korean and English, it's easy to understand what's being said within the context of the show. The songs, too, seamlessly mix Korean and English lyrics.
The show is a lot of fun, even if you don't know much about K-pop. The creators successfully blend the elements of K-pop music with a compelling story that draws in the audience.
