Long Island Kids' Activities June 16 and 17: Father's Day Weekend, and Strawberry, Barnyard Babies, and Green Festivals

This weekend is for the daddies, and there is lots to do with dear old Dad around town. There are all kinds of Father's Day celebrations, events, and activities (check out our Father's Day Activities guide for more things to do to celebrate Dad); a strawberry festival, a Baby Barnyard Animals Festival, and Port Jeff's Green Fest; a Princess Tea Party and a Pirate Festival; an ice cream social at the Cold Spring Fish Hatchery; and a concert on the lawn at the Planting Fields Arboretum. As as always, see our events calendar for even more fun activities happening on the Island this weekend.

Saturday

For Kids: Dragons and Damsels
Connetquot River State Park Preserve

Adults $4, children $3, children under 3 free + $8 parking fee
Indoors explore the lives of dragonflies and damselflies. Outdoors we will search for these beautiful, delicate creatures. We will loan nets, books and temporary cages. Advance reservations are required and may be made by calling the Environmental Office at 631-581-1072.

Ice Cream Social at the Hatchery

Celebrate summer with a free ice cream social with general admission. Visit two aquarium buildings, feed trout, and more.

Native American Father's Day

You and Dad can learn how to make fire without matches, grind corn, and use the stone drill in the way Native Americans did. Get the chance to observe and handle a few Native American tools and artifacts. After using the stone drill, you and Dad can get your faces painted.

Illustrated Storybook Writing Workshop

Award-winning writer/producer/director Tony De Nonno will guide and inspire your children to create, draw, and write their very own illustrated storybook in 90 minutes. Tony De Nonno’s workshop is a nonjudgmental, exciting, and exhilarating process whereby children (of all academic levels and backgrounds) brainstorm, share their ideas, stand inside the shoes of another character from another time and place, and then independently create their very own original illustrated storybook.

Pull a Print, Make a Kite

Inspired by the museum's current exhibition, "Sculpture/Jim Dine/Pinocchio," children will explore the art of Jim Dine through his Pinocchio prints and sculpture and will celebrate the season by making kites embellished with silk-screen prints. Like Dine, children will turn everyday objects into works of art. A fun-filled family day of gallery tours, supervised art making and family photos taken with Dine's sculptures. Weather permitting, part of this event will take place outdoors on the museum grounds.

A Princess Tea Party at Ballet Long Island is a unique experience for your princess! First, Cinderella, Belle, The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and more princesses dance for you. Then, you get to meet them and take pictures together. Finally, you enter our Tea Party room for a cupcake, cookies, and lemonade and iced tea! 58th Annual Mattituck Lions Club Strawberry Festival

Dig into the strawberry shortcake, sample the strawberries dipped in chocolate, try the strawberries any way you like them. Head over to the rest tent to enjoy live music.  Then find out what more than 100 arts and craft vendors have available for sale.
Cheer as the new Strawberry Queen is crowned.  Experience the midway rides. Taste foods from around the world.
