Weekend Fun for LI Families in the Hamptons & North Fork, August 20-23
So the countdown to the unofficial end of summer has begun. That doesn’t mean, however, that enterprising parents won’t find plenty to do on the East End of Long Island this weekend.
From car shows to barbecues and cardboard boat racing, late-summer events dot the landscape of the North and South Forks as communities squeeze out that last ounce of vacation before the kids return to school.

Talking Turtles - Cutchogue. Children can interact with some of Down’s Farms Preserve’s most beloved residents, its turtles.
Children’s Art Class - Southampton. Local artist and educator Paton Miller hosts a series of classes for kids 8 and older.
Friday, August 21
Beachcomber Creations - Quogue. Kids can bring their beach treasures to the library and create a unique keepsake to take home.
Frogs, Bugs and More -Montauk. Learn about the natural world from Sticker the Frog and Tickles the Hedgehog, then meet live animals.
Surviving as a Bird - Shelter Island. Kids learn about their feathered friends through storytelling and games.

Beach Backpack Adventure - Hampton Bays. South Fork Natural History Museum educators lead a tour of the bay and salt marshes of Ponquogue Beach.
Bring on the Bats - Shelter Island. Join environmental scientists for a discussion of the bats of New York State and Long Island, then locate a few at Mashomack Preserve.
ChessFest - Bridgehampton. Join the Children's Museum of the East End for tournament play and compete against a real grand master.
Cutchogue Fire Department Barbecue - Cutchogue. The granddaddy of all East End fire department fund raisers is celebrating its 58th year.
Discover Hummingbirds - Baiting Hollow. Kids can take a guided tour and discover ruby-throated hummingbirds as they visit Long Island to build nests and raise their young.
Snail Secrets - Bridgehampton. Also at SoFo, kids learn how to identify snails by their shells, then create their own shells.
Sunday, August 23
Cardboard Boat Race - Riverhead. The traditional children’s regatta was rescheduled from late June.
Classic Car Show - Hampton Bays. Hot rods, custom cars and more are up for judging at the fire department's second annual benefit.
Saturday, August 22-Sunday, August 23
Hallockville Museum Tour – Riverhead. Families can discover Long Island's agricultural heritage in a tour of the 18th-century homestead.
