Mostly Free and Fun Things to do in CT with Kids This Weekend August 16-17: SoNo Arts, Dragon Boats, Tennis, and More!

8/14/14 - By Jacqueline Miller

We returned from our summer getaway this weekend, and even though our traveling spirits were buoyed by these 10 Cool Car Games, we were happy to come home to so many fabulous local activities - including this weekend's SoNo Arts Celebration. We've got our list of 120 Things to Do with Kids in Connecticut Before They Grow Up to inspire us, too (we still haven't seen the Rock Cats play)!

Our suggestions for things to do this weekend are below. You can find additional activities in our Event Calendar, and our guides to CT Beaches and Water Fun and CT Summer Fun. Our CT Go List of activities is a monthly round up to help you plan ahead for the rest of the month.

Have fun!

There are children's entertainers and live music along the street throughout the event. Children can also visit the Children's Art Playground where they can create their own works of art to bring home. Saturday and Sunday. Free.

From 1 pm to 3 pm, children aged six to ten are invited to engage in gallery games and hands-on art projects. All children must be accompanied by a caregiver. (Our recent Day Trip to the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum has some great tips for visiting the museum, as well as some local restaurant suggestions.)

Tomato Tasting and Family Fun at Ambler Farm (Fairfield County)
My kids love "red sauce" on pasta and pizza, but somehow love for the simple tomato itself eludes them. I'm hoping this all changes at Ambler Farm's tomato tasting where they will have a chance to taste and learn about a variety of fresh heirloom, hybrid and “garden variety” tomatoes while enjoying lawn games including horseshoes, corn hole, a tomato-on-a-spoon race, and more. The farm also hosts a BYO picnic. Pre-registration is recommended, but walk-ins are welcome. $15 per family or free if you bring 3-5 organic tomatoes or a simple prepared tomato-based dish for tasting.

3rd Annual "Kidologie" Goes Back to School Children's Fair (Fairfield County)
This third annual event at the Westfield Trumbull Mall sponsored by Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital is a fun children’s fair for kids of all ages and their parents. A full day of live entertainment and activities is planned, including local and regional area businesses providing information on fun and enrichment activities, the latest trends, health, fall and winter programs, and destinations resorts.
