Love Your Park Returns to Philadelphia this Month

5/2/16 - By Lindsay Li

One of the things that makes living in Philadelphia unique is the dedication to green and clean spaces. This month, from May 7-14 Philadelphia celebrates the annual Love Your Park week. Whether you live near a tiny parklet, or near some of the cities major park attractions, families can get involved with making their space a little nicer, giving back to their community and sharing in a family-friendly event that teaches about the environment, and neighborhood impact. In addition to clean-ups, this city-wide event features family-friendly festivals and guided nature hikes to add an extra dose of fun to your service day!

The official start to Love Your Park week begins May 7, so we are highlighting a few of our favorite events taking place that day, but there are many more opportunities as well!

  • Chew Playground’s Do Your Spring Thing: This event, running 8am - 3pm, includes a plant sale, children's playtime and even hands-on planting instruction.
  • Ridge Runners Car Show: This event, taking place at Gorgas Park, runs from 8am - 6pm, featuring an annual car show with classics, customs and hot rods for your car lover.
  • Carpenter’s Woods Spring Fest: From 8:30am - 8:30pm, expect trail walks and a children's bird pageant. Your kids will love learning about history and nature at this event, taking place all day May 7 and again May 14.
  • Mifflin Square Park Service Day and Bike Rodeo: Taking place 10am - 1pm, this event includes a chance to learn some bike skills while you clean!
  • Identifying and Drawing Wildflowers in Nature: This peaceful event, taking place from 10am - noon, is especially for art lovers! Bring a sketch book and your kid, 12 or older, to the Wissahickon Valley Park, Cedars House.
  • LOVE Your Park Spring Festival at Hagert St. Park: Taking place from 11am - 2pm, this celebration of spring includes face painting, arts, crafts and music
  • Free Saturday Boating on the Schuylkill River: From 11am - 3pm, take advantage of free use of a kayak or rowboat, starting at Bartram's Garden.

Events continue to run throughout the week, with fun for all ages (including some that are definitely adults only), so check out the full line-up of options. And if you are most excited about the opportunity to clean up your nearest green space, you might also want to consider pitching in on one of the regularly scheduled clean-ups hosted by the Streets Department
