Diary of a Camp Mommy Director

What do you do when your kids run from the room screaming in protest when you merely mention the idea of camp? Sign them up and hope they get over their bizarre aversion? Send them to counseling instead? What if neither camp nor counseling are in the budget?
That’s where I found myself this summer. As a result, I ended up with a new job: Director of “Camp Mommy”. We’ve had a lot of fun this summer, bopping around the city, spending lots of active green time at the park, and having a steady stream of kids over for playdates. But coming up with a plan for each day – and successfully executing the plan – has presented some challenges. I have been tweeting “Diary of a Camp Mommy Director” entries about the pleasures and tribulations of my summer job. Read on for an expanded version of those entries, complete with links and ideas for anyone who has the job of entertaining kids for a day, a week, or – like me – an entire summer.
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
Day 1
We’ve created some much-needed structure to our days at Camp Mommy with morning schedules and weekly themes: Last week was filmmaking, this week we’re going around the world! After an eye-opening and conversation-starting tour of India yesterday, we’re headed to Mexico now. Guacamole, anyone?
Day 2
Sure wish I had found this guide earlier in the summer: It's Their Vacation, and You're the Tour Guide.
We’re rockin’ out with Karen K and the Jitterbugs this evening!
Day 3
The kids were about to claw each other’s eyes out (heat rage, I think) but Henry Bear’s Summer-Shops came to the rescue. We spent the afternoon in their Arlington store, where the air conditioner was on full blast. Check out their upcoming events.
Day 4
Armchair traveling to Thailand today. Reading Tua and the Elephant and cooling off with watermelon slushes.
Day 5
Went to @wilsonfarm for a tour, waited a while, no tour. Turns out it's next Thursday. I guess baby-brain-drain lasts for years!
Day 6
We were supposed to go to the Franklin Park Zoo for Art Moves at the Zoo, but we abandoned our plans for the day. Hanging out on the playground instead. That's what summer is about, right?
Day 7
We're wrapping up our “Around the World” theme with a field trip to a place in Boston where you can travel the world in a day: The MFA!
Day 8
Had a great time with friends at the beach in Duxbury. Now addicted to Farfar’s ice cream. Delightful toy store next door to the ice cream shop, too.
Day 9
Woke up late this morning, after staying up until the wee hours working. Dragged myself downstairs and was greeted by a life-size doll that my kids made out of old dance tights, socks, pillow stuffing, and fabric. Maybe I should stop scheduling activities and just let them do their own thing…
Day 10
The kids are making a movie about a fictitious place called “Camp Summer”. We filmed in the woods at Beaver Brook Reservation, then cooled off in the spray park.
Day 11
It's a week of Olympic proportions at Camp Mommy. Letting the kids stay up late and be inspired by the world's greatest athletes! Cool Mom Picks found these fun printouts. I like their idea of using the medals to inspire the kids to get active.
Day 12
Audrey's 15+ Day Trips post has ignited a spark of wanderlust. It's time for a day trip, but to where? Hmm..maybe Amherst.
