Visit the Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival at Burr Homestead

11/21/15 - By Cornelia Fortier

Due to renovations at the Burr Homestead, the Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival will not run in 2016. Look for an update in 2017!

If there's a heaven, I have a feeling it looks something like Fairfield's Burr Homestead, decked out for the annual Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival. If you're a fan of design, or just love looking at beautiful displays, stop by from December 3-6 when the Homestead will showcase more than 200 decorated live Christmas trees and wreaths, sprays, decorations and garlands galore.  At the Festival, each of the mansion's high-ceilinged, Italianate rooms is transformed into a Christmas wonderland show room, with different materials, color schemes and themes from room to room, making each its own special Christmas vignette. The mansion's uniquely decorated rooms, put together with so much thought, are created by local decorators and artists, who each bring a special eye to achieving a particular concept for a glowing, holiday look. And all of the specially-designed Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands and one-of-a-kind decorative pieces on view at the Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival are for sale. This year, the event's proceeds from the sale of Christmas items as well as admission tickets, which are $10 for adults and $5 for children, benefit Norwalk Grassroots Tennis, a non-profit that helps kids grow and learn through the medium of tennis. More than $3.7 million has been raised since the Festival’s beginning.

Upon arrival, you'll notice that even the Burr Homestead's wreathed and garlanded front door has been themed with a special Christmas look. When you walk into the mansion, grab a cup of complimentary hot cider and start your meandering journey through the glittering rooms. In the front hall of this historic mansion, the elegant stairway and banisters are brought to life with decorations in a spectrum of reds moving from pink through all the shades between to get to burgundy. Everything is generously accented with gold glitter and garlands are dotted with large gold ball lights and delicate dragonflies.

In addition to browsing the decorated rooms at the festival, visitors can happily purchase live wreaths or one of the handmade trees. Santa is on hand to take selfies with while a holiday gift boutique offers many charming Christmas items.

Kids can meet Santa too and the Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival has special activities for them, in addition to oohing and ahhhing over the Homestead's Christmas transformation.  Because Norwalk Grassroots Tennis is the event's beneficiary, organizers are picking up the tennis theme with “Make a Racquet” on Friday, December 4 from 5-7PM. At this kids' event, tennis star and Olympian Gigi Fernandez meets with the kids who can also enjoy a magic show and yummy food, make arts and crafts, and listen to a special music performance.

On Sunday, December 6 from noon to 2PM, a Mother-Daughter-Doll Tea features a children's and an adult's menu for an elegant tea party, with treasured dolls, of course. Entertainment is provided by the New England Ballet Company which performs a mini version of “The Nutcracker.”  A special doll accessory store is open to offer plenty of present ideas for doll lovers.

Since 1981, the glorious Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival's committed volunteer organizers and a crew of designers, have made the Burr  Homestead into a Christmas fantasy.  Visit for a special Christmas joy ride.
