Creative Holiday Photo Card Ideas
By Katie Owsley
This is it. This is the year. The year that we will get those holiday photos in the mail before, well...Valentine’s Day. This is our year!!!! But how to make the photo unique, adorable, and creative? A few ideas to help get your wheels turning:
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
1. Mascots, anyone?
Show some Connecticut pride! Love those UConn Huskies, Yale Bulldogs and Bridgeport Bluefish? Why not dress your spouse and kids in some apparel from Connecticut’s memorable sports teams? A UConn Husky basketball jersey, a Bridgeport Bluefish baseball shirt, and a Yale Bulldogs football jersey would make a great Connecticut holiday card.
2. Nutmeg State
Yup, it’s true...we are the Nutmeg State. So how about including a nutmeg inspired recipe on your holiday card? Try this one from Bon Appetit for Spiced Hot Chocolate with Nutmeg:
6 cups whole milk
3/4 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
15 whole cardamom pods, crushed
12 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks, broken in half
2 whole star anise
3/4 teaspoon whole coriander seeds
3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
3. Use your Kids’ Artwork
We love getting pictures of everyone’s kids. And we love seeing the kids’ artwork as well! Why not have your kids create a holiday banner of their own, and hold it up for a great photo op? The kids will love creating the banner, and will be ever so proud to have it featured in the family card. Fun afternoon of creating? Check. Holiday card adorable and ready to go? Check, check!
4. Cookies and Cards
No doubt about it. Kids love baking - and eating - holiday cookies. Try snapping a photo of your bakers this year (maybe even invest in some paper chef hats?) as they frost gingerbread men, nibble sugar cookies, and maybe sneak a few bites of that cookie dough. You’ll get a super-cute photo for your holiday card - the messier the better! - and a great afternoon of baking with your little chefs.
5. Online Cards
Online cards are hassle free. And inexpensive. And they conserve paper. Tough to find anything wrong with sending your holiday card via e-mail this year! There are quite a few sites that have free holiday cards you can email; try paperless post to get started.
We’d love to hear more ideas for creative holiday cards...let us know what you’re planning on sending out this year!
