Things To Do With Kids This Weekend in New Jersey December 17-18: Santas Abound and Hanukkah, Too!

We've told you our picks for Best Kids' Books for Holiday Gifts and given you recipes for No-Bake Treats for Overwhelmed Moms. Now as the last weekend before the Holidays (with a capital H) rolls around, take advantage of all the fun to be had with Jolly Old St. Nick. You've got your choice of sundaes, ice skating, train rides and special time with Sensitive Santa. Chanukah festivities are everywhere, too, with Latkerama and Chanukah Family Olympics rounding out the weekend fun.

Latkerama (Kinnelon)

Sundaes with Santa (Cranford)

Nibble on ice cream with Santa at Little Scoops on December 16 for a magical and delicious holiday evening. Honk! A Musical Tale of The Ugly Duckling (Red Bank)

The classic tale of the ugly baby duck who goes on a quest to find his mother, is revived by this production from Two River Theater Co.  Enjoy this family friendly adventure that celebrates being different.  Various performances December 16- January 1. Sensitive Santa Hopes to Bring Joy to Children with Autism (Clark)

The hustle and bustle of the holidays can be intimidating for anyone, but It can be even more challenging for families of children with Autism to enjoy celebrating. Santa has decided that it is important for every child to experience enjoyment with him, but in a much calmer, less intimidating environment.  Sensitive Santa means that there will be no distracting lights, overwhelming movements, or loud noises bothering children. When meeting with Santa, only the private party and a staff photographer will be in the room. Instead of having families wait in long lines at the mall, there will be 20 minutes allotted for each child.  Please call and make an appointment so that your child will have a sensory friendly and private experience with Santa.  December 17, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  For more information: 732-499-4540.

Decorate a Tree for Birds (Summit)

We love the Reeves-Reed Arboretum and all they do, and on Saturday children can create edible ornaments to hang on the tree outside the Discovery Center. Skate with Santa (Roselle)

Santa's a busy guy this weekend, but perhaps the family can catch up with him for an ice-skating date at the Warinanco Ice Skating Center.  December 17 and 18, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Admission required.  For more information: 908-298-7850.

Feeding the Army (Morristown)

As you enjoy holiday meals and sweet treats, join a Park Ranger at the Wick House to discover what kind of holiday meals awaited the men in Jockey Hollow. Not terribly delicious, let's just say. December 17, 1:00-4:00 p.m. For more information: 973-539-2016x210.

Laser Nutcracker Spectacular 3D (Trenton)

In addition to the classical music from Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet, the program includes Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and "pumps them up" with laser lights and other effects.  December 17- 18 1 and 3 pm through January 8, 2012. $7/adult, $5/child (age 12 and under). Chanukah Fever! With Mama Doni and The Mama Doni Band (Hoboken)

Mama Doni and The Mama Doni Band are expected to rock out with Chanukah Fever with catchy pop songs, a mix of reggae, rock, disco, and Jewgrass. Dancing shoes for the whole family are encouraged. Hibernation Masquerade (Basking Ridge)

Celebrate the Hibernation Masquerade at the Environmental Education Center: wear your pajamas, and stop by any time to join in hibernation-themed activities such as mask-making, storytime, and dancing.  Our favorite kids' band, The Fuzzy Lemons, will be on hand to rock out for the festivities.  December 18, 12:00-4:00 p.m. Environmental Education Center.
